In tf 2 Sam meant he was stuck here in everyday life while he could be out in about with the other autobots. The megatron revival scene is a perfect example of how TF's don't breathe

Well, just because they don't breathe air, it doesn't mean that they can't suffocate. I mean if nothing else (aka, if it wasn't a joke, misconception or continuity issue), it could always have been something to do with fluid or air travel traffic being disrupted, sort of like stepping on a garden hose.

They can travel thousands of miles through the vacuum of space without protection, so I don't think they need oxygen. Sam probably just assumed that they breathe and Bumblebee couldn't correct him since he can't speak.

Yeah, leaving aside that those are two entirely different continuities, which may have completely different 'rules' for how the TFs function, Sam was using 'suffocating' as a figure of speech, not in the literal sense.

It seems they don't need to breath but do - Megatron himself is breathing when hooked up to the life support.

It maybe something they do to regulate their energon flow, but its unnecessary in situations where they are in space or stuck in a cave with no oxygen.

It was a figure of speech.

A: "You're suffocating in here" is an expression used to indicate that someone is being stuck in a small place.

B: The Movie Universe is completely separate from the Prime cartoon universe, so your point is rendered moot.

Keep in mind the movieverse robots also have saliva and red blood, apparently.

    Sam was speaking metophorically.

Also, if TFs in Prime don't breathe, why was Starscream coughing and gasping after digging himself out in the exact same ep? Coughing I can understand, but why would he need to gasp for air?

It's not really "blood" so much as just "red possibly-hydraulic/cooling liquid meant to evoke the imagery of blood spatter."

Likewsie the "saliva" is probably anything but, yet it's purpose is to allow the Decepticons to spit in disgust.

Well in TFTM '86 Kup had bubbles coming from his face when he was underwater in the squid scene. So maybe they breathe in some universes and not others. That same movie had Galvatron choking Hot Rod.

I think the gasp thing of Starscream was more of a expression of "phew" from Starscream's part ["HOLY SHIT I ALMOST DIED!" = *desperated gasp*].

    Once again, different universe.

As for Starscream gasping and coughing, coughing may have been to clear his speakers or whatever so he could talk clearly, but yeah, gasping was a bit weird. It's clear that the only reason transformers exhibit traits like that it for humanization. Sort of like Megatron's labored "breathing" during his coma.

I always thought Megatron's "breathing" in coma was Energon flowing through his veins.

Or more realistically, removing dust from inside his mouth which could clog other systems.

I never really understood the whole "speakers in the mouth" idea behind how TFs talk. Then why do they have lips?

Yeah, that is a bit weird, isn't it? I haven't seen very much of the TF universe, but I would assume that maybe on Cybertron everyone had that facepiece Prime had in G1 (even though others didn't), and that maybe "mouths" weren't really neccessary there. Maybe they just... randomly...grew them, to be more "humanized" on Earth?

I dunno, shitty explanation. But I agree. Having lips is a bit pointless.

Also, didn't G1 Wheeljack not even have a mouth?

    No G1 Wheeljack didn't have a mouth. Many G1 characters didn't have a mouth, just a faceplate.
