At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, after five years, The War to End All Wars ended after 37 000 000 casualties. 8 500 000 soldiers were killed, 21 000 000 soldiers were wounded, and 7 100 000 went missing or were taken prisoner. Millions of civilians were killed or wounded but I can't find figure that isn't speculative.

I've always found it difficult to collect consistent figures, so if the numbers are off I apologize. Although, it's impossible to know just how many people were killed, wounded, and displaced.

    Wear a poppy.

Never again, lest we forget the war to end all wars.

Yeah, it's so easy to forget WWI. It was a fascinating period though, what with the Guilded Age, the Lusitania disaster, etc. Look up the Olympic, Britannic and Mauretania sometime. Amazing stories.

Actually, I do live in Australia. I've been here for over a year. And Australia did take part in WWI. Australia and New Zealand troops were the main force sent into Gallipoli, Turkey in 1915. They were just as involved as Canada was. We were all in it together with the British.

I see. That I did not know. My apology. I was going by your "location" (I supppose that is a terrible assumption), but nevertheless, we are still in the beginning of the 10th of Nov. here

Wasn't World War II much worse than World War I, or do you have another day where people remember World War II?

I think there's room for debate on that one.

We don't really have another day for WWII. Nov 11 is Canada's general war memorial day. We use it to mark remembrance of all wars, not just WWI. I'm not sure about other countries. We also have V Day and D Day, but they aren't as big as Remembrance Day.

Ah, I see. Hm we do not have such days, but I think it is cool. Our days have more to do with church and so no one really cares about the days except for having a holiday.

Yeah, Remembrance Day has grown since World War I to be a day of remembering any soldiers or peacekeepers who have served Canada from World War I to the present. We take it pretty seriously too. It's probably the most solemn and respected statutory holiday of the year.

almost 100 years have past since "The War to End all Wars" began and ended and now only 3 veterans of that war survive 2 British and one American. Let us not forget the sacrifices the men and women of all nations made in what is largely a forgotten war, overshadowed by the Second World War fought less than 30 years later.

These videos in are to honor those who fought, both those who made it home and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.

Lest we forget. God speed to all the fallen soldiers who died for our freedom
