BBC News - Anti-aircraft laser unveiled at Farnborough Airshow

Apparently, this was an actual demonstration at the Farnborough Air Show, England.

Yes, the dream of H. G. Wells and so many others is now reality. The battle-ready 'heat ray' or 'death ray' is here. Small planes are in big trouble, as are many other unprotected objects, creatures and people.

    Wow. That's pretty amazing.

I thought for a minute they had done the actual test at Farnborough. I was gonna say 'How'd they manage to do that here?'
I'm glad they did the actual test somewhere else lol. I'm about five minutes from the airfield, and as much as I love the planes, I wouldn't want to find a UAV through the windscreen of my car :lol

I was at the airshow yesterday, and the display the Raytheon people had up was pretty awesome. Loving the idea of battleships being mounted with Death Rays.

Ah, but an aircraft coated in mirrors would render lasers useless.

they actually say in the text that basically if they just make it stupidly powerful it would just heat the mirror till it would fall apart

The destruction is very localised but the burning spot can be moved around automatically, following a moving target at close quarters. A larger version is very possible. I see this solar weapon as a fall-back when energon is low or other weapons are unavailable.
