I can't wait for CERN to turn this thing on. I love all this stuff about how our universe came about. It's fascinating, isn't it?

HOLY SHIT THERE'S A RAP VIDEO!

Watch it if you don't understand what this purpose of this collider is. It's easy to read and fun! :lol

Some amazing stuff may be discovered. However, I don't think it will have anything to do with black holes or the creation of the universe.

Do I think it's a bad idea to fire that sucker up? No. If it works, and we learn incredible junk, then great! If it backfires horribly, instantaneously ending all life on Earth, then... GREAT, 'cause I'll be dead faster than I can process the enormity of the error.

Oh great, are we going to have this "OMG, eet will makes a black holes" shit again?

Hopefully there isn't a hydrogen leak this time.

Hopefully, something will go wrong creating Mechanical sentient beings.:)

    I'm kidding.

Hopefully, ATLAS will do it's job. They named it ATLAS for a reason. (Atlas is the greek god that is supposed to hold up the Earth..... or something like that.)

I hate seeing 'Official' in thread title that are just simply discussion.

About 2-3 weeks back, I read through the wiki and the associated links that branch off regarding the subjects they're attempting to learn more about (The higgs boson, the possible existence of supersymmetry, the possibility of extra dimensions) and I admit that I am just downright excited. Any knowledge gained by the activation and operation of the LHC will be good knowledge, mistakes and all. No matter what, our knowledge of the universe will grow by leaps and bounds once the HLC tests begin. And that's awesome.

Unless the thing goes wrong and we end up destroying the planet and the human race. Since this machine is not curing cancer/aids, end wars or human poverty, it´s not worth the risk IMO.

I've said this to a lot of friends IRL and I maintain it here - unless you have solid, credible evidence, replete with examples, of the possibility that this catastrophic world-ending scenario may occur, please leave the calculation of errors to the professionals.

The construction of the LHC has been overseen by countless professionals, based on a design conceived by some of the world's best scientists and engineers. Again, unless there's solid, beyond-a-doubt proof that they deserve to be doubted, don't doubt them - they're scientists.

Additionally, I will kindly point out that the concepts being proven by the LHC have a very broad range of applications, given a long enough period of time for that knowledge to disseminate into the public science conscious. Who knows? Maybe some portion of the research performed at the LHC *will* make it into cancer research/prevention.

Yeah, we did, last year when it was started up for the first time. I won't link to it now, because in 3 years it will be dredged up.

Here's an article about the chances of the LHC creating black holes that could destroy the Earth. Can you say ZERO PERCENT? I knew you could.

All I see when this thing keeps coming up is "Enormous waste of money". I'm not afraid of anything bad happening, I'm just in awe at the amount of resources wasted on this thing.

...or energy production or travel or just basic understanding, a lack of which is arguably at the root of all war.

I'm thrilled about this thing. This is why we're here, why folks keep the world running for the brains--so that we can advance as a species, and knowledge is the only was to do that.

If it actually does destroy us (and I don't believe for a moment it will), then we definitively weren't anything special or unique (in the sense that if we were, God or whatever would stop it) and I don't care if we die.

How many other sentient lifeforms in the universe have killed themselves with self-created black holes?

    That will make us special.

The funny thing about research is you don't always know what you're going to discover or what the applications are until you discover it.

That's a pretty simplified argument but it's an important one to keep in mind.
