Laird is "remastering" the original TMNT comic (poorly)

This has been common knowledge for quite a while in the TMNT fandom, but some of you not-so-hardcore fans may not know about this.

The reason there haven't been any trades of the original Mirage TMNT VOL. 1 issues lately is because Peter Laird (the sole owner of the TMNT franchise after he bought-out Eastman) wants to personally "remaster" each an every issue (or at least the ones he considers canon). By "remaster", I mean he wants to re-ink, re-tone, re-letter and even change some artwork around.

He's already released the first issue to show-off his "remastering" skills. Personally, I think it looks like rubbish.

    You be the judge:

    Original ... Remaster
    Original Original ... Remaster
    Original ... Remaster

It looks like he completely sucked the life out of the artwork. His "remastering" process even goes so far as to remove some very atmospheric details, like the shadows of the Purple Dragons on that first page.

Laird also says that he intends to do a completely new version of TMNT Vol. 1 #8 so that he can omit the character of Cerebus. Supposedly the reason is Laird doesn't want to pay royalty money to Dave Sim.

Anyhow, this bugs me. I was hoping for some nice, high-quality trades of the original series. Instead, he's going to give us soulless garbage. I'm glad I have my original issues locked away where Laird can't touch them.

Looks like washed-out shit. Damn George Lucas for making this okay!

I've picked up a few back issues here and there, wondered why there weren't trades. Maybe he'll release them later in OG form to make even more money.

It definitely sucks, I don't like it, but at least now i will be able to read those mirage stories, i only have one of the old mirage graphic novels, I want more, i can deal with some shitty "remastering" as long as i get the story.

Jeez, sure it remasters the line work but it kills all the small details. I might as well be tracing them on a lightbox =_=

It looks like he intended for the pages to be colored to be honest.

I'll be dodging this since i'm only a dozen or so items short of a complete Mirage TMNT collection, but its absurd that arguably the most sucessful independantly published comic in America has been out print for so long and that its not even going to end up in its original format when it finally does show up again.

    Dear Dipshit Laird:

The reason comics use computer fots for lettering now is because it's cheaper, not because it's better. Hand-lettering by the original artist is much more valuable. You have essentially spent extra time and money to lessen the value of these reprints. You are a tool and stupid.

    Love,
    N

Hey, DrSpengler, it's Time Mistress from the 'Drome. And I know exactly what you're talking about. I hadn't had a change to see the scans yet though and I totally agree. Cleaning them up takes away the charm and some of that underground, independant comicbook feel. I'll stick with my orginals as well (or rather my graphic novel color reprints.) Do you think issue #8 is now going to look more like the plot of the 2k3 ep that introduced Renet?

    Yo, how's it goin'!

I think the biggest change to #8 (aside from omitting Cerebus) is that Laird will likely remove a lot of the silly humor, like Romero's goofy magic spells and what-not.

I wouldn't be surprised if it mimicked the 2k3 version, as that one manged to adapt the issue while omitting Cerebus (well, save for that cameo by a vageuly familiar aardvark) at the same time.

If these things are going to be in color then I might be somewhat okay with it as long as the coloring job looks good.

But the lettering just doesn't look good despite being more readable than the original.

Well, if you can't find the original issues or any reprints, Laird's new versions would be okay and cheaper, especially if you just want to read the story.

There are some older trades, but all of them are out of print.

There's colections for the following I know of:

First Comics put out 4 color edition volumes of the first 11 issues, plus the Leo 1-shot. (This I what I have.)

Mirage did trades of the following as well (b&w):

Vol. 1 Issues 1-11, plus the Don, Leo, Mike and Raph 1-shots

    Vol. 2 Issues 12-14 (I have this.)

    Collected Issues 16, 22, & 23 - not in continuity

    Collected Return to NY

I don't know if 15-18 were collected or not, but I think so

I don't think the got up to reprinting 24-26 and I know they didn't do anything beyond

Complete Collected Tales of TMNT (Vol. 1 ) All 7 issues. I have this.

Shell Shock - collects all the rare short stories that appeared in other comics, very hard to find, but I have one.

    Recent Trades Still in Print

    Soul's Winter - #31, 35, 36 by Zulli, not in continuity

Leonardo Blind Sight - collects Tales of TMNT Vol. 2 # 5 and the follow up mini

Tales of TMNT (Vol. 2) - collection of Donatello focused stories, they seem to being doing these by character, not issue order. Tthere another one supposed to come out soon that has all the non-Turtle focused stories like Casey, April, etc. I think next, either that or another Leo focued one can't remember.

    Trades Due out soon

TMNT Movie 2007 Prequels #1-5 and Adaptation, expect around the time the DVD comes out

There may be more trades out there, but these are the ones I know about.

Fairlady z - thanks for the reply, I will keep an eye out for the stuff you mentioned. I never had a chance to check out the original comics despite being a turtle fan...yeah, shame on me...
