Where did that name come from? Does it mean something? It has to be the lamest name in all of Transformers. I love the character but hate the name

Let's take a look at the word "Pickup"

    Pickup

G1 Kup turns into a sort of cybertronic pickup truck, so it does sort of make sense I guess.

Oh, I see thanks. Gosh, they could've been more creative though.

It's a better name than say, Windbreaker, wouldn't you agree?

Erector, Discharge and Stalker are all worse names i'd think.

Actually, while it may be sacrilege to say so, I'd submit that quite a few of the names from TFTM are terrible.

Rodimus Prime: okay, "Hot Rod" isn't the most creative name either, but "Rodimus Prime" sounds like something the writers came up with in five minutes just to get the script finished. That was the best they could do for the character intended to replace Optimus and be the new center of the show? And now, more than two decades later, we're still stuck with the name for legacy reasons.

    Kup: as mentioned above

Springer: okay, maybe at the time it seemed okay for a character intended to be an "action guy" (he springs into action, I guess?) but it just makes me thing of springer spaniels and Jerry Springer.

Arcee: I guess intended to be a form of "RC," possibly for "Race Car?" "Radio Controlled?" That doesn't make any sense. I dunno.... I guess at least it sounds sort of feminine.

Wreck-Gar: Animated actually did a decent job justifying this name, but what were the writers originally thinking? Okay, I get "Wreck," but where does the "Gar" come in? Although weirdly, despite its oddness and the fact that it doesn't flow off the tongue, somehow this name still seems cool. Odd, but cool.

To its credit, though, the movie DID give us some good TF names as well: Cyclonus, Scourge, Unicron, Blurr, and Galvatron are all pretty great.

I always thought Wreck-Gar was taken from the words Wreckage and Garbage. As you know, he does come from Junkion the garbage planet.

Yeah, it probably is (and that's how Animated explained it, which seems reasonable), it's just sort of a clunky name. But it fits the character, and like I said, despite its clunkiness (or maybe partly because of it) I still like it.

Perhaps that one belongs on the "good names" list after all. :)

    So, so true.

From what I remember from the toy's Tech Spec, he was supposed to have hydraulics in his legs that let him 'spring' and jump high or something stupid like that.

I so agree with this, Rodimus Prime is the worst name in TF history to me, Kup is inspired in comparison, I mean just imagine they'd put a little more thought into it, even when I was 7 or 8 when I first saw the movie I though Rodimus??? Why couldn't they just have called Hotrod Excelerator then we could have had become Excelsior Prime, its not as good as Optimus or Ultra Magnus for that matter but a damn sight better sounding than Rodimus, that name just feels so forced and lazy.

    Oh this!

For such a well-written show we had a parade of garbage names.

Actually Kup was not a "cybertronic pickup truck".

He was the designers idea of what a Earth style pickup truck might look like 20 years into the future.

    'Huffer' is pretty lame.

As is 'Ratbat'. I get the bat bit, but where does the rat bit come from??

'Wheelie' is a bit naff too.
