So I've heard horror stories that characters like Blaster are called Bill or of the like in the English audio (which we won't be getting and am glad so if this is the case). My question is, in the Japanese audio are the characters called such names as this? I would at least like to see Blaster called Broadcast as that is his Japanese name. Someone PLESE tell me that this is the case with these DVD sets.

they will be named their proper names.. those goofy ones are only in the dub.

Though I do kind of hope, for continuity, they change names like Cha and what not into their US counterparts..

I mean thats assuming they use the same dubs as the UK releases.. which it would seem unlikely to me that they would change it.

I hope to see "Convoy" in the subtitles, not "Optimus Prime" when they shout "CONVOY!"

I mean, where would you draw the line? I sure don't want to see Go Shooter, Cab, and Minerva called Siren, Hosehead, and Nightbeat.

Clearly those are different characters so your analogy dosen't really work.

    Convoy is Optimus Prime.

Demanding the use of the Japanese names is just otaku hair splitting. Use the names that fans in the US are used too to avoid needless confusion. I'm relatively certain the releases in the UK already did this.

The Australian Madman releas has the option of either for the subs of Headmasters. One with the American names intact and one with the Japanese names. Masterforce and Victory are Japanese names only though, which is just fine.

If only we WERE getting that version

most of the names in that dub are just nonsense, but the Spike one actually makes sense. They didnt know who the character was, and when they heard the Japanese voices call him "SPAIKU," they did some kinda effort to literalize what they thought they heard

Thats interesting, but yeah the only time I can think of that would need US names would be when Wheeljack and Perceptor show up in Masterforce.. other than that all of the characters are exclusive to those shows and thus have no US counterpart..

Why would it need US names for Wheeljack and Perceptor? Their Japanese names are... Wheeljack and Perceptor!

Lists of the Japanese names of the G1 guys have been available on the internet for years. :p

Basically, not all characters got new names for Japan. Optimus Prime became "Convoy", Bumblebee became "Bumble", Jazz became "Meister", Cliffjumper became "Cliff", Bluestreak became "Streak", Sideswipe became "Lambor" and Mirage became "Ligier"; however, Starscream, Megatron, Soundwave, Thundercracker, Sunstreaker, Wheeljack, Hound and Ironhide all retained their Hasbro names. Just to name a few.

I'm aware of that, the internet is a wonderful tool. But I never had any reason to look up names for characters I already knew the names to did I? I don't spend every waking moment of my life memorizing what Bonecrusher is called in Italy or Bumblebee is called in Malaysia... Sorry if that dosen't suit you.

I clearly was interested in them at some point in the early days of my career at TFW, evidenced by my screen name, My interest some what dimmed towards the Japanese shows about the time I actually was able to watch them.

So really... no reason to change the subtitles to the US names, since most of them ARE the US names... Even more importantly, only Optimus Prime/Convoy is named in dialogue, I believe...

Oh, wait, no... There's the Headmasters characters... I'd just prefer they left the names the Japanese names for the subtitles.

This is all moot since niether of them are called by name in Victory anyways. Perceptor is referred to as "Doctor" once or twice, but that's it.
