I mean.. AGAIN :
Yeah, it definitely hit that martial arts fantasy cheesy vibe pretty perfectly. And as a teenager at the time, I remember it having a lot more skin on show than most any other show. They knew who their demographic was.
No Sub Zero or Scorpion? Yea not gonna watch this.
Annihilation is not a great movie, but it did a better job than 90% of the video game movies ever made of being true to the source material. I've never understood why it gets shit on to the level it does. Are people in denial of the goofiness of the source material?
i think it's more the goofiness of the effects and the sentai level fight scenes. everyone doing that huge leaping front flip stuff. the final fight being two awful cg monsters didn't help either. it's one of those movies that wasn't good when it came out and aged worse. at least the first one felt like mortal kombat. annihilation was just....trash. i think it was a product of the times too. i don't remember much else that good from around that time either.
no argument about the video game movies. that's a notorious landfill of just shit and i have no idea why...the story is basically done for you. how do you mess it up? in a genre where the DOA movie is more faithful to the game franchise than 90% of other offerings there has to be a problem. the games are tournaments full of scantly clad women that occasionally play volleyball..and the movie delivered just. but somehow movies like mario bros, street fighter, king of fighters, max payne and even assassins creed fuck it up. even wing commander screwed up it's own movie and the same people that did the games did that movie.
sorry to derail there...bad video game movies baffle me. do a shot for shot of the game's cutscenes for fucks sake that's what most people want anyway.
See, but I thought Annihilation was actually a whole lot closer to MK 2 & 3 than the first movie was to 1. For me, it's the first movie that has aged horribly, while my opinion has softened on Annihilation. It's cheesy fun (DOA also falls into this category). For me, it seemed like they spent so much effort trying to distance the first movie from Enter the Dragon that it ended up not feeling like Mortal Kombat, either.
But yeah, sad to say, but collected cutscenes on youtube of MK9 and X are probably always going to be better than any actual movie they can come up with.
There was a TV show featuring Kung Lao
Yeah, Conquest. We've been talking about that.
If I remember correctly, it’s about the original Kung Lao, not the current bladed hat one.
Mortal Kombat Conquest, we have been discussing it in the above posts. I recommend Phelous' by episode reviews of the show.
It is on the same levels as Xena and Hercules, really, just using an established game for a setting. For what it's trying to be it wasn't bad, I just wish they used better main characters. Even 1-episode guest stars were more interesting...
(Also, for a heterosexual male, there are some damn fine looking martial artist ladies in revealing clothes in that show... Vorpax, especially)
Heh, just posted the same thing above. I mean it even had Angelica Bridges for a few episodes as an immortal sorceress Omegis... who of course tries to seduce Kung Lao because why not.
Indeed, I was wondering if Assassin's Creed could break the mold, and it failed utterly.
Interesting that so far, we could even say In the Name of the King is a better video game movie... because it actually EXPANDED on the story of Dungeon Siege, as that game basically had no story other than "hack and slash your way through linear dungeons".
Oh sorry, I realized totally forgot Warcraft... though I guess most people did. Will that ever get a sequel or it tanked that hard? IMHO that was the best video game adaptation yet, as in that the story was just as unfathomable to me as it was to anyone else who only played the Warcraft 1-2-3 games and not WoW, but all the MMOR-Porgers got the references, so I guess it did what it set out to do.
Lol yea the phelous reviews on conquest were gold....
It was just such an odd show....loads of eye candy though. Oooooo and bad acting. Plus the entire point of the show, build a team to defend earthrelm, never happens. My biggest gripe was that only one of the main characters was played by an actual martial artist....well two but raiden never fought till the end. Raiden is also the best with how little fucks he gives throughout the show. But yea....a show about martial artists has only one among the main cast. I hate when live action fighting game adaptations do that. One thing the tekken movie got right was loading the cast with people that could fight. I feel it hurts the movie when theres an obvious fight double and you can tell when they do it and in conquest you knew when kung lao's fight double was there.
Oh I almost forgot...quan chi. He was priceless.
So I don’t remember any of the dialogue from MK Conquest except for one line. Vorpax was telling someone that she got thrown in the dungeons for “self deception.” What is that?! Self deception??? Sounds like some lame kind of crime you’d find in a bad fantasy fanfic.
.... so it fits perfectly in this show. That’s the caliber of writing we have here, but it works.
For me, it was all about Kiri, played by Sung Hi Lee.
Whenever she came onscreen, I wasn’t paying attention to anything else. I had a bad crush on her for a while.
Reading this thread, reminds me of these videos:
It would be quicker to point out everything right with MK:Annihilation. I got in to see that movie for free, & I still felt ripped off.
Everything right?...yeah that would be quicker. It may be a 10 second video then
I’ll have to check out that vid to see if they cover all my gripes about MKA.
My gripes about Annihilation are the laughably bad special effects. And they really are bad. Sheeva's arms especially crack me up every time she's on screen. And the fight against Motaro makes me howl with laughter. But that's about it.
The story is closer to the source material than any video game movie up to that point and about 80% of the video game movies since, including the first MK movie. The characters are relatively close with a couple glaring exceptions, and the fighting is good enough. Whatshisname big jaw guy made a pretty good Shao Khan, too. I don't get the hate for this movie, and I don't get the love for the first movie. I think people have it backwards.
Looking back, the show definitely had a deliberately porny atmosphere to it with the hilarious acting and the gratuitous amount of hot women wearing skimpy outfits for no apparent reason. You know that Quan Chi was probably keeping those girls in some sort of dungeon between episodes or that Shang and Vorpax were at it as soon as story moved elsewhere.
On a surface level, maybe. In terms of cheesy action on a tv budget with hammy acting, sure. But without any underlying themes or character development. In terms of depth, I'd put it closer to the Masters of the Universe cartoon.
Granted, but it took Xena quite some time to develop a theme as well. If Conquest had lasted more than 1 season, it might’ve turned into something more.
.... Naaaah. It would’ve been cheesy martial arts fantasy with half naked women all the way to the end.
Separate names with a comma.
