My wife has an Itunes account and many songs downloaded onto her desktop which she in turn has loaded onto her ipod; my question is, if I were to get a seperate Ipod would I be able to upload songs from her account as well or do I need my own account? She states that I would need my own account.

You can sync to the same account just fine. You just can't sync to more than one account at the same time (if you sync to a different account, then that one will overwrite everything synced from the previous account).

No, you don't need your own account. You can sync from her computer, or if you have your own computer, you can authorize her account on your iTunes and then sync from there. Either way would work.
