    You may remember this thread:

    http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/showthread.php?t=157091&highlight=Mario

Where I bought a Wii (along with Super Mario Galaxy) to give to my sons for Christmas, well, today I broke that bad boy out while the kids where at school and played Wii sports for damn near two hours and downloaded the latest firmware updates.

My excuse to my wife was that if I downloaded the firmware updates and entered the mac address onto to filtering on the wireless connection now, we wouldn't have to do it on Christmas morning.

The shitty part is, I know how fun it is and now I have to wait until Christmas morning to play it again!

A similar thing happened to me last year.

I went out with my dad to buy a Wii (1 week after release date), and we got one from Best Buy. Of course we had to wait there at 7:30 in the morning, but hey, it was worth it.

Then I had to wait like 20 days until I could actually play it; as it was a Christmas gift. The worst part is when I stared at it for 5 straight minutes and realized that I wouldn't be playing it for a while.

Then when Christmas came, the waiting was well worth it.

A friend of my wife's broke out Guitar Hero 3 from the package a couple weeks ago (a Christmas gift for his son)... only because he didn't want to get beaten by the little guy.

My big brother and I broke open my G1 Soundwave the week before Christmas, 1984. Gifts given early, especially when they are not supposed to be, are the best kind.

just so you know, if they ever check the wii message board, they'll see a record for today saying what you played and how long you played it. there is no way to delete that data from the message board either. makes it handy for monitoring what your kids play and for how long, but it can definately backfire in this case.

good call on the system updates though, those can take a loooong time and it really sucks waiting for them to download.

who else knew exactly what this topic was gonna be about from the title?

I would do the exact same thing. Heck, the Wii was my Christmas present along with 5 games last year from my wife, her parents, and my parents, and I opened it and played away from day 1 of launch. Couldn't wait another month.

oh and download the check mii out channel, it has a bunch of fan created mii's you can get on your system. Some pretty impressively imaginitive characters. And pllaying bowling with admiral ackbar is pure win. ( cue ITS A TRAP picture)

Got that beat. My mom preordered me an Xbox (the original) along with three games (can't quite remember what they all were at the moment). Picked it up at launch..and it sat unwrapped right under the stairs until Christmas morning.

I bought the Wii for myself, but the closest thing I can relate too is coming home to see packages waiting by the front door a couple of weeks ago.

One of them said right on the outside, in big bright red lettering what it was. I now have to wait until CHRISTMAS and AFTER to get it installed on my truck.

    :D

Oh, D_C, I'd say get your kids some Wii Gift Cards so they can download some old school games and have them unwrap the cards FIRST! THEN come out of a closet with the Wii all repackaged and ready to go. Hide the IR sensor bar behind the TV so it will take only minutes to get online instead of an HOUR or more including all of the updates.

Tundra, that's pretty neat. Things like that aren't legal in Pennsylvania, sadly. We can't have any pretty lights on while the vehicle is in motion.

And Tundra's suggestion about the Wii cards reminds me of what my parents did to my brother and me when we got the SNES for Christmas...we unwrapped games for it, but there was no system. Our parents said that Santa Claus must've made a mistake. Then they "magically" found that Mr. Claus had left one last box downstairs - the SNES, of course. LOL

::sigh:: Ah, for the days when the holidays weren't so damned stressful....
