AFA have graded Chinese TFs in the past without making note of their origin.

yea i heard about that in the past, however they always put "china issue" on the recent cassette reissues though and this one was graded just this month.

Its a Chinese issue (you can tell by the chest and emblem stickers). However, I think this one was released when g1 was still going on. So it is not a recent re-issue

Fred documents it on this page

...in that case i'm inclined to say they dropped the ball.

This sort of toy is supposed to have the "China Sticker" variant under AFA's categorization. Technically, though, it's not that it's a variant of the 1987 toy, but that it's actually a Chinese release from the 1990's. The recent knockoffs (Swoop, Optimus, etc.) are categorized under AFA's scheme as "China Re-Issue". That is technically also incorrect, as they're not reissues, they're bootlegs.

Yeah, AFA dropped the ball here big time. They don't seem to be aware that the other way you can tell its the 90's chinese release is that on the lower part on the back of the box, the "Made and printed in [Country goes here]" after the copyright info is removed/blacked out. Someone should probably contact them...

for a company that charges 50-100$ per grade (avg) you'd think they'd notice things like this or do a little more research. If you run the afa, they say manufacturers date is 1987, i think afa thinks its hasbro release.

When it comes to categorization and identification of variants/knockoffs, AFA doesn't really know any more than the fans do, usually less, unfortunately. It is definitely not their strongest quality.
