CAn't post a link 'cause the WSJ is subscribers-only, so here's the whole article. I'm sure some of y'all play MMORPGs and even 2nd Life, but I'm not sure anyone takes it to this level. Don't know how you'd find time to post here if you did...

Anyways, my short answer is: Yes, I think he's cheating.

Man, Second Life is so freaking lame. It's like the lame academy of lame attended exclusively by lamers. Is he cheating? Kinda yeah.

He's a fucking idiot, that's what he is.

His wife should throw the goddamn computer out of the window as it's clearly an addiction.

He's not even playing a decent game! Good lord people, Second Life looks like it was coded by a blind Furry with a hard-on for high latency. Why does the media insist this game is the latest thing? It's just damned awful and it's populated mostly by complete idots, perverts and people devoid of all social graces.

    GAH!

That's adorable, the way you tried to call me out all sarcastically and make me look stupid.

But! Wait for it...wait for it...

THE LINK YOU POSTED HAS THE WORDS 'WALLSTREET' IN IT. WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS? AND AT THE TOP OF THE LINKED ARTICLE, IT SAYS 'THE WALL STREET JOURNAL.' WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS? AND THE AUTHOR CITED IS A WSJ COLUMNIST. WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS?

    Jesus.

    Wow.

I'm glad I quit after Frogger and Asteroids. The video game world seems really bizarre these days.

Man, this guys virtual life sounds way cooler than his real one. I, for one, don't blame him. Recall that his "real" wife is heavy-set and 58 years old. Great article.

Umm.... okay. Never been a words person, so read bits and pieces.

If the guy's wife did the same to him; got a virtual husband and all, and her real-life husband doesn't consider it cheating, then no, he isn't cheating.

Either way, if his real wife has enough, she can always leave... Not like she's being kept chained to the kitchen or something (I hope not, at least).

His wife really should seek a divorce. She's way too tolerant of his addiction imo.

It's borderline cheating. At least, by the rules my wife and I have had in place since day one.

Cheating can be done in one of two ways:

    1. Doing something involving another person, real or imaginary or whatever, that you don't want your SO to know about. (Obvious expemptions for planning a birthday party or something where you keep it secret temporarily.)

    2. Doing something involving another person that your SO disapproves of and you KNOW they disapprove of it.

Now, he's definitely treading on number two. However, I say it's borderline in his case because he's pretty clearly got some mental issues where he's using an online world to escape the real world. I mean, sure, I did that with Dungeons and Dragons when I was thirteen but, you know, I WAS THIRTEEN! And even then I had the sense to realize it wasn't reality.

So, um, yeah. He's probably cheating, but he's cheating on himself at least as much as he's cheating on his wife.

I've seen worse midlife crises. He's most definitely a tool, but he's not cheating on his wife.

Go ride your hog with your ol' lady. It's not her fault you're better at a virtual life than a real life.
