Yes, it was released in China. Completely legit. There are a number of threads on this set.

Can't get em on eBay anymore, I suspect that Amazon will follow eventually.

Yup... its legit .... and awesome! I bought it on EBay for about that much. It is a very nice alternative to the US sets as they are kinda pricy

"Legitimate" Chinese set is always such a gray area. Yes, it's legitimately made in china (re: not made somewhere else)

As to whether or not it was made under any sort of licensing or permissions agreement... that's doubtful. The long arm of the law is a great deal shorter over there, especially with DVDs.

Does anyone know if the US sets are still available/in production?

No, they aren't. Rhino lost the rights to publish its DVD sets two years ago, and Sony has axed any hope of their own release any time soon.

You had better believe that if you asked Sony if it was legit they'd assure you that it most definitely isn't. Again though, Chinese DVD licensing... major gray area.

It IS the cheapest (short of zomgsteeling online!) way you can get your hands on the full G1 series, it's a nice case, and a pretty classy package altogether.

... Just don't be so quick to call it "legit". It is, however, most definitely "real"

haha, yeah, I was thinking that the OP just was asking if the actual item was "real", and not a scam, or some horrible bootleg.

The funny thing about this set is that nobody seems to be able to say for sure wether or not it was ever actually liscensed. It's likely not an official release, but nobody seems to be 100% certian.

While I do like my Chinese set...I love the Rhino sets. Didn't pay full price for any of them. Got them all on Amazon for around $25-30 a piece as they went on sale.

Well I just bought my tin set off of evil bay. It was a bit more than $70 but for what's being offered and the prices for the Rhino releases being far beyond my budget this is a steal.

Yes, and yes. It's a region 0 so it'll play on anything, and the dialogue is in english.

The picture and sound are both very good. I don't have anything to compare it to as I don't have the other TF DVD releases, but the picture and sound quality are pretty much on par with Anime from this era I have on DVD.

Picture and sound quality are great for this set. The audio is in English. When I play mine, Chinese subtitles come on automatically which I turn off.

That box set is about as legit as the current G1 KO's that seem to be everywhere.
