Is there always a mouth under the faceplate?

  1. Yes. All TFs with faceplates have a mouth under there, whether we ever actually see it or not.

  2. No. The faceplate IS the mouth, unless it's been specifically shown otherwise.

  3. Depends on the individual. Sometimes there's a mouth under there, sometimes there isn't.

i like how masterpiece op's faceplate acts like lincoln's beard; it filled out the face area to give the illusion of strong chin and jaws and perceived leadership qualities.

I don't acknowledge Prime's mouth! Nothing under those faceplates!! BUT...I did vote for "faceplates are mouths unless it was shown otherwise."

Sure enough, that's what I saw when I disassemble MP Prime's head.

I say other: Depends on the continuity. In some G1 continuities, like the origina cartoon and Marvel Comic I would say no. The mouth plate was the mouth (this is confirmed in the G2 comic when Jhiaxus tears off Prime's mouthplate and it's just wires and circuitry). Later continuities (mostly post BW) show the mouthplate to be an optional battle mask.

And that's to say nothing of characters with neither (Whirl and Shockwave come to mind).

Face plates are for robots whose guardian unit did not want to spend on dentures on their protoforms.

Otherwise, its Like freddie mercury or James hetfield having facial hair; they just look funny without it.

For Optimus Prime: He has a mouth, but prefers to leave his faceplate out.

For Soundwave: He had a mouth, but he was damaged, which also caused his speech pattern.

For Shockwave: He has no mouth, just a little slot that opens up so he can refule.

I think in G1 , the bots with faceplates didn't have mouths, but the speaker box thing instead.

Orion Pax probably had his face/lips/jaw/mouth damaged by Megatron, so AlphaTrion hooked him up with the mask/plate.

I am almost positive Soundwave had a mouth in the marvel comics during the Underbase saga for example.

Shockwave and Wheeljack I never considered having mouths, they were Robots. So they looked like that. Shockwave would have had a way to take in his energon, remember Prime's tube that hooked into Elita's chest/stomach. Same idea.

DreamWave added a cool little notion, taking the toys that looked odd with faceplates (Jetfire, Brawn, Bumblebee) and actually showing them remove or put on the faceplates, as battle masks.

In Headmasters, Sixshot is shown sippin on some energon drink right through his faceplate. Maybe he was just savoring the smell.....

I'm not really including Prime, Animated, or anything "non-G1".

How bout Grimlock? Are those really his teeth under that muzzle of a faceplate? Is his jaw wired?

This is what I think Wheeljack, Shockwave, Soundwave and all them cats looked like under the plates:

Though, to be fair, that part of Powermaster Op is just a "helmet" isn't it? Well, on the toy anyway. I suppose in the comic it was his real head
