Is there a mouth under the faceplate?

Is there always a mouth under the faceplate?

  1. Yes. All TFs with faceplates have a mouth under there, whether we ever actually see it or not.

  2. No. The faceplate IS the mouth, unless it's been specifically shown otherwise.

  3. Depends on the individual. Sometimes there's a mouth under there, sometimes there isn't.

This is something I've wondered about for ages. Do all transformers with faceplates have mouths under there, or not? Take G1 Optimus Prime...as a kid, I assumed the faceplate WAS his face, so if it got ripped off there would be nothing but circuits and wires underneath. This would apply to other bots like Soundwave and Wheeljack too.

Now, the more recent versions of Op all have a normal face with the faceplate as an optional battlemask. Even IDW has drawn G1 Optimus with a mouth under there of late (though bots like Ironfist show no indication of having one). And Prime's version of Wheeljack has a normal face with a retractable battlemask as well.

So, what do you think? Did G1 Optimus or Soundwave have a mouth? Are faceplates always just a piece of battle armor, or can they be part of a TF's anatomy? Could the presence or absence of a faceplate outside of battle have any social meaning?

Realistically, aside from animation errors, Yes.
Optimus had one in the comics, on the MP mold, and Orion Pax had a mouth (not sure how that carries over though.)

I put no because that's how I always imagined it, even before seeing that comic, but I don't consider a speaker a 'mouth' in the way most people mean when they say mouth. I was really surprised when I got older and fond that so many thought there was a human like mouth under those faceplates.

Who's got a picture of MP Prime without the faceplate? I can barely get a glimpse on mine, and it looks like it might be funny.

I guess it depends on the individual, both viewer and character.

Having seen the Movies and the Beast Wars, Animated, and Prime cartoons before G1, I think of Optimus having a mouth under the face plate. The original cartoon even leaves that possibility open with the Orion Pax origin. Having a mouth works for his character, as having it visible makes Optimus easier to read and thus is more relatable.

On the flipside, I wouldn't think of Soundwave as having a mouth in most continuities (Movieverse being an obvious exception). On the same token I wouldn't think he has a pair of eyes under his visor, either (again Movieverse is an exception). Soundwave having no mouth (or eyes, or tone in voice) works for his character, as it makes him far more cold and distant.

The faceplate is the part of the face, there is no mouth. Uhm... but wait, when I think about it, how do they consume Energon then? OK, they are robots and maybe the ones having a faceplate consume Energon through something else, there is no need to consume it through a mouth, that's just something to make them appear more human.

I prefer the 'no mouth' option, but acknowledge that some bots might have mouths beneath the plates and others none.

In the G1 cartoons, the TFs consume energon by ingesting it through the mouth, so I always assumed all TFs have mouths under their faceplates. :2c:

Just googled that. Does that really look like a scary skull? Than I will remain with "no mouth".
