    I am extremely interested to see how this develops. I have to say that after dropping DRM and now this, EMI is looking like the least evil of the major music labels.

    They don't serve a purpose. Musicians don't need them for promotion anymore. All they are is a middleman who profits. There is no valid reason for the RIAA to exist.

    Record labels are an outdated concept and are not necessary any more.

    IIRC, Warner Brothers and Sony have also recently made sentiments of dropping DRM too. If this indeed true, keep your eyes glued to Amazon.com's DRM-free mp3 downloads for music from artists on those labels.
