Well since rusting would require oxidation of a ferrous metal and it is unlikely Transformers are composed of it in sufficient quantity to be an issue, dare we assume the rust on Jetfire behind could be of the Cosmic kind?

A test of this is where Megatron spent a few years in the ice and was not rusty despite exposure to high levels of water / oxygen.

i doubt they'll go that far in the movie. Too much to explain something like cosmic rust to an audience who haven't followed the cartoon.

I'm sure there's nothing elaborate about the rust. Bay and the writers have boiled it down to the simplest terms. Jetfire is a machine. Jetfire is old. Old machines rust. Jetfire is rusty.

I think he's probably just reacting to someone calling him a rusty old robot, which is unfortunately undermined by the whole "gear in hip exploding" thing.

It's not cosmic, it's in his ass! Obviously when they were rust-proofing him someguy was like "I ain't touching that" and now it's come back to bite him... in the ass!

    This.
I believe that it's no more then a little joke playing off the idea that a robot getting rust is like a human getting a rash.
I doubt they really care about the detailed science behind whether or not transformers actually rust.
It's like when Mojo peed on Ironhid's foot, and he exclaimed: "Great, that's going to rust."

I think those were sparks from him scratching his arse.

Didn't look like that to me...Seemed more like something gave out and exploded, he even limps for a bit because of it.

Despite some of the concern about Jetfire, he could turn out to be one of the coolest TF's in the movie.

    I second this.

And from the looks of it he appears to have been stored outside in his jet form for what? 40 years? And he may have just waken up. Theres no context of time in this trailer..

Why would it be cosmic? Ironhide was pissed when Mojo pissed on him in the first movie. Seems like they can rust on Earth.

Haha thats what I thought as well...I mean he is old and probably doesn't have the control over his "gases" anymore!
