In TFA, Soundwave's minions, Ratbat and Laserbeak have their alternate modes as Guitars and function as attack drones and instruments of sonic weaponry.

Does anyone prefer them be cassettes as their G1 versions.

Of course, In G1 their main roles were spies which they are not anymore in TFA, so cassettes would not serve their roles in TFA as well as in G1.

If they still have cassette modes they can have functions to attack and spy(information-gathering.) But now they are only use is offensive function.

The creativity for their new modes is great. But is there anyone who likes them better as cassettes?

    Cassettes are outdated. It's 2009, not 1984.

As much as I like G1 Soundwave and his cassette-bots, the musician in me prefers musical instrument altmodes.

I'll go against the grain and say cassettes. Although I enjoy watching Animated and love the movie, Soundwave and his minions best alt modes to me will forever be a cassette recorder and cassettes.

Well, I think you can't really compare them since cassettes area absolutely outdated.
Even if they would have a cassette mode in "animated" it simply wouldn't work anymore.
Today we have CDs or MP3s and the like. Personally I can't even remember the last time I've seen an audio cassette in a store.
So, for "animated" the guitar-modes are very well chosen as they still fit to Soundwave as a character.
But for G1 it was a very good idea to give Soundwave his cassette minions.
Back then it worked perfectly well.

So, for me both modes are equally good. I have no real preference here.

Oh is that what the expression 'against the grain' means? I've never heard it used in a sentence, English isn't my first language, so that's always puzzled me.

Maybe not cassettes as they are out dated but I do prefer them being able to transform in to small things and store in Soundwaves chest rather than this giant robot walking around carrying two guitars around lol. Seems a little silly.
I always loved Soundwave activating a load of warriors ejecting from his chest, Like Barricade with Frenzy in the film.

Depends on the era. In a modern context the guitars and variants work better, if it was a bit retro then the cassettes would be awesome. I'm not really fussed either way.

    Updated even more...

I wish someone could make Soundwave's minions transform into CD's,that way you have modern-style robots and could fit more than one into his chest compartment.

Cassettes all the way. They just work better IMHO because they can actually be stored in both modes and its just kind of a coll idea.

Cassettes. Don't give a shit about the times. That's how I know them, that's how I like them.

But the guitar and keytar alt. modes were interesting and a fun twist.

I do love axes. Cassettes, not as much.
