Since we're on the subject of pets, is it normal for dogs to eat their own shit from time to time, namely upon the aftermath of more fragrant meats being excommunicated from the back door? Like, I've heard of this happening at some point from pretty much every dog owner I know, but my mom swears to all that is holy that it's "not normal", so I figured what better place to ask than here.

    ... yup.

Yes because dogs digestion is too quick to pick everything up so there are still nutrients in their poo.

I just made my dog ashamed of it when she was younger. Yet she still would randomly roll in it.

Dog fact: Dogs love stinky stuff and hate good smelling things.

I don't think it's normal, but it sure is funny!

Yes, one reason is it's their way of "cleaning up."

    Also because they like it.

Its called coprophagia, can be an indicator of a dietary problem (aside from the fact dogs will just plain eat anything), and it should be discouraged before it becomes a habit. Your dog does lick your face at every opportunity, true?

    And :google  !

Yup, my old dog used to do that all the time, he lived to be about 15, don't think it's a health issue. My horse does it all the time too, but horses are stupid.

My dogs will do it, if I'm not there to stop them.

I guess there's gotta be a way of training dogs to avoid this (although regulating what they eat is probably a better route), but it just seems like something they's stop doing after a while out of better judgment.

Do other animals get into a habit of this too? I'm sorry if this seems like trolling or whatever, but yeah. Nasty stuff :(

There is..you say NO! real loud. Squirt gun and rattle can on top of that and after a while they'll stop (as far as they'll let you know anyway MWA HA HA HA). Dog training isn't easy but an intense run at it in a couple weeks gives a lifetime of results.

I used to have a Shih-Tzu who was bad about that. I used to keep an eye on her everytime she took a dump and not to start to eat it.

My dog is now about twelve years old and she only started to do this a couple of years ago. She gets in the cat litter too. But then she'll eat anything. I can't let her run on the beach off the lead anymore because she'll scoff anything she finds, be it horse shit or seaweed or bits of driftwood.
