Is it just me but has anyone else noticed that in every trilogy the first movie is always the best, the second is the one that sucks the most, and the last one is average? Like the Tf Movies

And that's why alot of people think, that Empire Strikes Back is the best of the OT. ;)

And staying with Star Wars, I like RotS from the NT best.

In other words - no, I don't think it's always like this.

    X-Men.

    Spider-Man.

    Star Wars (original trilogy).

    Bourne.

Not true in all these cases. There are probably more but those are the ones that immediately came to mind.

Terminator 2 is the best of the Terminator series.
Many say the Two Towers is the best of the LOTR trilogy(I still like Fellowship of the Ring is better).
The Last Crusade was on par with Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Aliens was also the best of the Alien franchise.

Oh hell yes. Can't believe I forgot about Aliens!!! (although I suppose technically it's not a 'trilogy')

I share similar thoughts of the Tf trilogy, IMO I think it follows the Indiana Jones Trilogy:

    1st was the best
2nd was the over the top silly entertaining one
3rd tries to come back around to as good as the first but didn't quite make it

Has there ever been a great 4th movie of a franchise?

I don't think it's true in all cases. In my opinion, the new star wars trilogy sucked big time. Who would have ever thought that Darth Vader was a spoiled brat?:)

Meh, second trilogy of SW had the same thing going for them, the first movie was awful.

Lord of the Rings. First was great, second was not quite as great, third was amazing!

Like most of these silly 'rules' they're utter bollix. And considering how greatly the opinions of people differ on just about everything I don't understand how any of these 'rules' become the supposed norm anyway. I know many people think Empire is best SW film but I've always preferred A New Hope myself.

So I'd say yes in a sense: it is just you. But it's also 'just you' for many other people. There's no connection between them to give a basis in credence to the 'rule' of how good or bad movies are in a franchise line depending on where they come in the timeline.

It's a pretty even distribution across most trilogies, I think. There are plenty of examples of the first, second, and third films being the best in the trilogy.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.

Loved by critics, made a ton of money, and beloved by most of the fanbase as well!

I'm no expert, but perhaps fans of Bond (the 4th movie was "Thunderball") or Harry Potter (which also had a 4th movie) would comment on those as well...

Trekkies and Trekkers do seem to really like The Voyage Home and it seems to have some key moments that non Trekkies and non Trekkers remember so there was some cultural impact to the film.

Thunderball is considered a pretty good Bond film among the Bond fans because Sean Connery still had his Bond swagger and hey Bond gets a jet pack so cool gadgets as well. Kind of gets over shadowed by other Bond films so it's not one of the most popular or iconic Bond films.

Harry Potter 4 is the one with The Triwizard Tournament. Don't really know enough Potter Heads to know how they feel about Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Yeah, Empire Strikes back and Aliens would like to have a word with you. Also, I thought DOTM was superior to the original TF.
