So Blackout and Grindor are both different characters in the movie? Perplexing.

Yep. I don't like the idea more than you do, but it seems that way.

Maybe the Decepticons are too lazy to look for unique vehicles to scan so many of them are scanning the same vehicles, so Demolishor/Scavenger, Blackout/Grindor have the same alt modes. So far, there seems to be only 1 Scorponok.

Exactly! Why not just call him Vortex and be done with it?

    Oh yea... HAha!

Well from now on I'm calling him Vortex on the grounds that he might as well be. =D

Maybe because most of us back then were just some snot-nose kids who just wanted to watch a cartoon and didn't give a rats ass about the details?

Wrong. You're reading that in a way to infer what you want from it.

All they are saying is "there is a reason why there is a character called Grindor and a separate character called Blackout". In general, not in the film.

Blackout is definitely NOT in the movie. Grindor is.

    LOL.
The quote is "Grindor – reason for him being there as well as Blackout."
So you're suggesting that him saying 'there' didn't mean 'in the movie'.
And it is ME who is stretching it to believe what he wants. LOL!!!
I couldn't care less if it is Blackout or Grindor.

That's assuming you know the context of the question, which you don't, and it's also assuming that the answer was written down verbatim, which it most likely wasn't.

The crowd member probably asked "Why is there a figure called Grindor when we see Blackout in the trailer? Is that Grindor in the trailer, and if so, why not just call him Blackout?"

And the answer written down is "Grindor – reason for him being there as well as Blackout". Right?

Well that simply means what is says: there is Grindor, and there is Blackout. Not necessarily in the movie together, but existing as different characters in the toyline, and probably (due to the evidence) in the movieverse.

And the "reason" they are talking about for having both characters? It's simple: Blackout's dead, and another Con has his alt mode. What are you suggesting, that they are going to BRING BACK a dead Con, then have a SECOND Con with the same alt mode in the same movie with no explanation?!? Do you really think they are going to confuse the audience in this way? And wouldn't we have seen both characters in the adaptations, or seen more toy redecos for Blackout (without the new name)?

Blackout is not in the film. He is not in any promotional material or adaptations, the most we've seen is a Robot Heroes figure, and that's because they're doing Robot Heroes of the TF1 characters (Brawl, etc). All game material and main line toys refer to the chopper as Grindor, he is unnamed in the adaptation, and in the trailer and toy he has a new head. All of which signifies he is Grindor.

And since Blackout shows up nowhere else, you're just reading their comment as wish-fulfilment on your part. What you're suggesting, is a lot more far-fetched than the likely answer.

In the trailer, lots of Decepticon protoforms crash into an aircraft carrier with lots of jets. Maybe lots of these Decepticons will be the same looking jets. It does seem easy for protoforms to scan the same helicopter and all of them will look like Blackout. If you already have lots of Blackout lookalikes, there does not seem to be a great need to resurrect the dead Blackout unless Blackout was a really swell guy.

According to the novelisation, only one protoform hits the aircraft carrier:
Megatron. He does it purely to sink it.
But I've heard talk that Long Haul and Mixmaster are in that scene now, too. And the trailer DID show multiple impacts.

But no, no trans-scanning in that scene.
At least not Grindor, he dies earlier on.

Blackout died. He will stay dead. We already know which fallen Decepticon is resurrected. The means to bring about his return was used on him and him alone. It cannot be reused. Grindor just has the same alt mode. The story required a Decepticon helicopter. The CGI model already existed for a Decepticon helicopter. Simple economics tells you to make slight alteration to the existing wireframe to make a new character rather than building a new one from scratch.

Lookalikes have always been popular bec. it made it easy to sell repaints, cartoon drawings can be reused, CGI animation can be reused, etc.

I hope that's right. I don't want any repaints in the movie.

They wouldn't change Blackout to Grindor for no reason what-so-ever as this would only confuse the audience for no reason what-so-ever. I mean they didn't change Megatron's name to Galvatron when that is something that should have happened.

"Grindor – reason for him being there as well as Blackout. "
"Demolishor & Scavenger is not an accident, there is a reason for being two names."
    (Bob/Orci BotCon Q/A)

That's it I give up. I will have no choice but to wait. Sigh.
    Unless it's a lie. . .
