I was chatting with some friends of mine today about the TCC magazine. We seemed to be very divided over whether or not the new G2 Laser Optimus update is G2 enough. I thought it was very faithful to Laser Prime's style, but others seemed to think it needed the glaring color palette that defined G2.

    What do you guys think?

I'd almost bet your friends have the perception that G2 was nothing but G1 toys in neon colors.

All said, I think it is a reasonably authentic remake of the figure

Scans of the magazine aren't allowed on the boards. Mods will get you for it.

To answer your question he looks G2 to me. Just a little more streamlined and modern obviously.

There were a lot of bright colors in G2, but that's not all G2 is.

Gen G2 Prime is an update of G2 Laser Prime and looks it.

Painting the mold in G2 Bruticus colors might be cool too, but it wouldn't be G2 Prime... it be maybe a bit like Toxitron.

Actually looks pretty decent, and is recognisably "G2".

Actually, no. I think he looks a little too...I dunno, awkward. Like they tried to drip-drop some movie vibe into his design and it just kinda came up short.

I really like the original mold for laser rod Prime...looking at the new one, I think they would have been better off if they had just retooled that mold a bit.

There's pics of this guy already? Id love to see them.
Not knowing what he actually looks like, I love the G2 Laser Prime as a mold, but always hated the colors. That's why I repainted mine in G1 colors instead. Personally I'd like to see this new toy be painted in true, G1 Prime colors.

I can definitly see the G2, but he looks more like funky movie trash to me.

The new Laser Prime looks very close to the original color scheme. Did your friend expect more when he said its not G2 enough? Like getting different colors that shouldn't be together?

Yeah, she's a big fan of the BotCon 2010 box set and just loves the sea of colors that shouldn't work together.

He's G2 enough for me, though I can't deny that there are some movie influences (the flames, and the sword is more movie than it is G2). Only issue I have with it is the legs. Yeah having that many tires is accurate to a real-world truck, but it just makes the legs themselves awkwardly skinny. I'll still get him though, and his hopefully inevitable Scourge repaint.

I too got a movie inspired color scheme and design feeling. The sword even has a movie inspired design to it. In the intitial tiny pics on the web, I didn't notice the flames on him, got the magazine yesterday and finally saw the flames.

I do agree with those who see some movie qualities, but I think it's mostly the head sculpt.

I believe the only pics available are in the club magazine. Got mine last night.

I think the G2 laser prime colors are a good change of pace from the same-old-same-old G1 colors constantly reused on every Prime mold.

Ya, there probably is a bit of movie influence, and a repaint in "G1" colors would probably pass as a deluxe "Movie" Prime.

The legs maybe look a little funky with 8 tires on them, but again, the 'change of pace'/variety/mix-it-up argument makes me like it. Maybe it doesn't look standard-normal, but sometimes that's a good thing. And I don't recall any transformers having doubled up wheels before. (Hmmm... maybe I have a vague recollection, but can't place it...?)

No point in just retooling the original one... since that'd be about a voyager and they just made a new voyager movie prime, they'd be too redundant. I think Gen. G2 Prime exists for the reasons of having a new earth-mode Generations/Classics Prime and for having a deluxe pricepoint prime that's a bit like movie Prime too.

A Scourge repaint would be amazing.

That's exactly what I am waiting for.

I just wish he had a light-up sword.

See for me, I'm a fan of the G1 colors and the character. I love looking at my Prime shelf with all those different interpretations of that same character, yet seeing how the head sculpt and paint job tie them all together.
It's a personal preference. I'm a creature of habit I guess, I like original colors (still waiting on a red, movie Ironhide), while others like variety.
Like I said, I love the original G2 Laser mold, but I did repaint him in G1 colors and love it so much more! I'm looking forward to this one, dont know if I'll repaint it or not until see it first, but at this point I'm guessing probably not.

So even though Laser Prime already had flames and a sword, this new mold of him is somehow a movie homage?
