I've gotten to the point where I've started creating my own storyline/continuity, so Drift absolutely has a place on my shelves.

I have Drift with my Classics. I don't really think of Classics as straight-up G1 ports anyway, I think of them as an updated "alternate/neo-G1" and sort of as their own standalone universe. Within that framework there is room to add some additional non-core-G1 characters (like Drift, Lugnut, Lockdown, Hot Shot, Treadshot, Device Label Cheetor and Tigatron, Big Daddy, etc.).

I don't generally go out of my way to develop a personal canon, but I admit that with Drift I made an exception. To counteract the silliness of his official characterization, I decided he is actually a low-ranking Autobot chef. His swords aren't swords but are instead cleavers for preparing Energon nigiri and other delicacies. The Drift comics are not reality, but are in fact his lonely daydreams about what he wishes were his life were like. Generally left to "guard the base," he secretly hopes the Seacons will invade and give him the chance to shine....

I don't see why we can't have new characters in G1

Haha, that sounds like what happened to Ricochet from Botcon 2005. In that storyline, he was Ben Yee's fan character and a super spy. But now in the Elite Guard storyline, he's a paper pusher who tells people fantastic stories about the adventures he's gone on, but no one can verify that they've ever happened.

Yes indeed, he's there with my Season 3 Autobots, since for the most part (Springer, Kup, Blurr, Perceptor), those guys are the new Wreckers in IDW

    Yes he is.

My Classics are set up in rows. The Decepticons have four. The Autobots have five. Bigger in the back and smaller in the front. In the middle of the two factions is Drift. With Jazz and Kup in the second row. Wreck~Gar in the third. Laser Rod Prime and Thunderwing in the fourth. Finally Tracks is in the fifth.

The set up tends to change whenever a new figure arrives. Dinobot and Cheetor were put off to the side of the rest to make room for Scourge and Perceptor.

I've also been on the fence with drift. He's a nice figure but I feel like he doesn't fit in with my mostly g1 collection. I may pick him up one day if I can get him loose and cheaper than retail as I still see him on the shelfs every once in a while.

Can someone who isn't a technophobe like me whip up a digibash of Drift in Roadhandler's and Gunrunner's colors?

I see no reason why he wouldn't be part of the Classics shelf. He is the epitome of Classics, and a great toy. :)

Yeah, he fits fine with Classics for me. But then my Classics collection also contains several characters who are either entirely made up (kitbashes), or new characters repurposed from figs from other lines (like various BM and Cybertron figs). He may not have been in the original cartoon or anything, but there are far more Cybertronians than the relative handful we already knew. He's just one of those.
