Neither I always envisioned it just came from the word "Brute"

I think the name Bruticus is derived from the word brute, as in brute force/power/strength.

    I think you're way off.

It's just Brute with the icus added to make him sound like a gladiator.

The connection: I cannot see it. Bruticus could not have less in common with Bruce Lee.

Unlikely Brutus, no-way-in-the-HELL Bruce Lee (bigass dumbshit gestalt inspired by martial artist, that makes total sense). I agree with Wollstone on the name etymology.

The Popeye character you have pictured is "Bluto". Brutus is a character in Julius Caesar by Shakespeare, and he betrays his leader, so if there's a comparison to be had, it's there.

    But I think even that's a stretch.

Bruticus - dumb, tough giant robot combiner
Bruce Lee - kickass martial arts fighter who invented his own style of martial art.

    Definately a connection.

But I agree with the guys above me, they're all good reasons

Instead of Popeye's brutus, how about the Brutus who conspired to kill Julius Caesar? (Kind of how he was created to overthrow Megatron)

    Edit: Oops, already mentioned.
Alternate theory: They needed a name that rhymed with "Dudeicus"

Bluto was also called Brutus due to a copyright mix up. So he is okay with that, but there is no connection save by a slight possibility the Shakespearian one you pointed out.

I like to think that Bruticus was named after Brut cologne as part of an ultimately un-realized cross promotion between Hasbro and Fabergé.

Starscream named him after Brutus because he admires betraying your commander for power.

    Really, I don't care.

All I know is now I have visions of Bruce Lee fighting Julius Caesar as a Gladiatior in ancient Rome.

    Sweet.
