I'm just curious as I consider myself goth and wonder if anyone else here is. If so, express yourself. How do you dress, what's your interests etc.
I find that being goth is where I fit in. I'm into the dark and the mysterious and I find them beautiful. Also, Goths try to break away from the norms and values (what's normal and acceptable).
Why are Goth's called Goth? I mean, the origin of the word comes from a Germanic Tribe known as the Goths who eventually split and became the Ostrogoths and Visigoths. They originated in modern day Romania (known back then as Dacia) and had numerous encounters with the Western and Eastern Roman Empires. These encounters were forced, as they were being pushed by tribes from the steppes who were all trying to flee from the Huns. Was it because they couldn't assimilate into Roman Society and were considered to be different that our modern day Goth takes this name as a moniker? I'm just curious, would a Goth please explain why they call themselves a Goth?
Cuz, liek, Dracula is all gothic an' shit, rite? So liek if I'm wearin' black an' paintin' mah nails black an' all avoidin' sunlight an' lissenin' to tha spookiedy musicz an' watchin' da tim burtons den I am teh goth! Edwood Scissorfingers <3
That's the whole problem with being young. You're trying to figure out who the hell you are yet you're compelled to surround yourself with people just like you. It works at cross purposes. Thank god for college.
Who basically conform to their own non-conformity. Hung out with a bunch of Goths when I was in High School and they have to be some of the funniest people I've ever had a chance to spend time with. They go on and on about not 'conforming to society's standards' while all the while they will all conform to each other's non-conformity (in other words, like most teenagers, they copy their friend's opinions and trends... these just happen to appear non-conformist because they aren't the 'norm') and they also like to write poetry about the mysteries of the universe and act all deep, but there's really nothing deep about it. On a side note... most of these 'goths' have gone on to be very average and everyday people with normal jobs, families and the like. Basically, everything they didn't want to be and swore that they would never be to 'stick it to the man'. And, like someone also mentioned, thank God for College, because that's where most of these poor kids got their heads out of their rears.
I personally love being different. I being a freethinker is fun too. It's not just about wearing black and wearing make-up (although I sport black nail varnish.)
