The Inhumanoids television show and Hasbro toyline is perhaps a bit less well known today, but was a very important part of my childhood along with Transformers. What’s not to like about 10 story tall monsters from the center of the Earth that spit magma?

Given all that, I always felt the Metlar toy did not live up to his representation on the box art or the TV show...and certainly not even the basic concept behind his character. I always had a vision of a giant elemental demon composed of rock and heavy minerals from the molten depths of the earth that was as hot and dense as the mantle. Instead, he just looked like a small brown troll. Very disappointing given the amount of detail sculpted on the figure.

I set out to combine two projects I had been wanting to try: 1) see if I could make Metlar cool, and 2) experiment with a LOTR Balrog or the Fallen type paint job resembling magma glowing from cracks in the cooler exterior. I tried to make the center of his belly and back appear the hottest and cooler towards his arms and legs. An added challenge was to maintain the glowing look but also honor Metlar's color scheme with the addition of a metallic copper and iron looking finish. Hopefully I hit the mark.

The only modifications made were 1) the addition of crushed decorative glass on to his torso, arms, legs, and face to give him a more rocky and sinister appearance, 2) resin was added to his mouth to look like magma drool, and 3) shortening of his stupid long troll nose to look closer to the cartoon appearance. I think the shorter nose made a world of difference that made! See the WIP pics at the bottom of the page.

Metlar is part of an ongoing project to upgrade the Inhumanoids figure line. Here are my other entries so far:
    Earth Corps
    Blackthorn Shore
    D Compose

This is my first attempt at photography with a dark background, so hopefully the pics turned out good...

    MISC
Here are the only other Metlar customs I could find on the interwebs:
    By Laserbeak on OSW
By Hammer of the Gods on Figure Realm

A cool catalog showing pre-production versions of the toy lines (definitely better than what was produced!)

This is easily one of the best customs I've ever seen. Paint apps and additional details to make him look more like he is part of molten rock are perfect - looks better than the show. Truly a work of art. Well done, sir!

The paintjob on Metlar is incredible. The molten lava in his mouth looking a little bit like runny cheese is probably the only little thing I don't 150% love.

This was one of my dream projects and really liked the cartoon. I actually re-watch the series..and it would make a great monster two part movie..

And this figure is AWESOME! You did it justice. Great work on this.
