Anyone buy the new Radiohead album? I downloaded it today and I love it. Its better than Hail to the Thief. They went for a very minimalistic approach compared to their latter albums. Very few microbeats, and barely any synths. Guitar, drum, bass, vocals. Nigel did some arrangements for some string parts in a few song. But I love it. Its a good stripped down record and their business model for delivering the new album is brilliant.

Did you do the digital download only or are you getting the album later too?

My wife tried to explain this to me last week about how it was going to be available for download first. And that you could purchase a package to get the download and the actual disc later.

    Got a link to it?

80 plus bucks for the Discbox set. That includes the album on two vinyl records, the album on cd, and a extra disc with bonus tracks, and the digital download. Or if you don't want the discbox set the price to download the album is as much as you'd like to spend, a minimum of 1 dollar to cover credit card fees. The discbox set isn't going to be shipped till Dec. 3rd, but I think its worth it. They plan on releasing the album later next year through more conventional ways, but owning the discbox is worth it IMO.

I've been looking forward to hear the album. Maybe a little later.

I forgot to order the box set (got all the other Radiohead albums on vinyl). I've been trying to get on the site today but have only been able to once, then the order wouldn't go through. I figure there's just a lot of traffic with the downloads being made available today. Hopefully I can get place the order later.

Not a fan of Radiohead, but love what they're trying with the download sales. Hope it works out well for them.

I'm downloading the album for free, and will purchase the DiscBox next paycheck. I love Radiohead and will gladly give them money for what they are doing.

Just wanted to add that if anyone gets the chance to see Radiohead live, GO! They sound just as great live as the do in the studio. Their performance at Bonnaroo in 2006 was phenomenal.

I'll give 'em some money now and buy the regular disc when it's released next year. I ain't spending $80 unless it includes a ticket to see 'em. I fully support what they're trying to do, but I still prefer physical media and I'm not paying full price twice even for Radiohead. There should be another option besides the $80, say any amount over $10-15, where you download it and get a 'free' CD via mail now rather than wait for the retail release.

So $80 gets you the album now via digital dl, and the CD and records in Dec...then the CD itself wont see a regular release until next year?

    Correct.

I downloaded it, but like a dumbass I did it while on my laptop, which isn't where I sync my music. So while I was looking forward to listening to it today at work, now I'll have to wait until I get home, transfer the files over to my desktop, re-sync, and probably not check it out until tomorrow.

The website loaded for me finally...

I think my wife will splurge to get the record early... because she loves Radiohead. She'll probably end up just doing the digital download b/c of the price...

I couldn't see buying the set because they are selling you 3 versions of the same thing... the albums will never get played, the digital download will get tossed once the real disc arrives... which makes it sound like $80 for a cd that you'll get earlier than everyone else and some bonus material (that may or may not end up on the actual release next year).

Now I'm not head over heals for Radiohead like my wife, but I do like them enough to enjoy their music. And I applaud them for trying something unique like this, but I have to think about it as a consumer.

I guess the opposing argument could be....
What if this was format was applied to a band that I liked? Would I spend the money? I guess I'd have to look at the extras and determine their worth.

My post is not attempting to start a war... I just wanted to discuss it further.

    Alright cool, just clarifying that.

It's tempting, but I am unsure as I don't even have a record player anymore :)

    :(

I still have records though! :)

I plan on fixing all of that once we get our house and I have more space for everything.

I was finally able to get my order through for the set, well worth it to me. I love to listen to records at home so those will get played, and I'll have the CD to copy and listen to in the car. The downloads will be good for early listening, but will likely be ignored once I have the actual CD and LP. It discbox also has an extra CD with more music (which I assume isn't included with the downloads) and additional artwork.

The site says the discboxes are made to order, so it will be limited to those who order it. As a collector of fine vinyl I can't pass that up. Once a record is out of print (especially a limited run) the price can go up dramatically. Case in point: I purchased a 4LP box set with an entire concert performance by Pearl Jam through their fan club. It didn't take long for the set, which was limited to 2000 copies and sold out in about a day, to go from a price of $40 direct from the fan club to hundreds of dollars on ebay.
