They should let cops wear tennis shoes.

Have a feeling they will be chasing more people on foot now.

I wish we had ninja detectives, that were trained in martial arts.
No need for handcuffs, just shoot them in the neck with an arrow.

Why stop at car stoppers. Have everybody implanted with a chip in their necks that is attached to their nervous systems. The po-po push a button and booosh! A person stopper! I am getting that patented.

IDK, I like the idea, but worry about loosing more personal freedoms. It is just one step closer to total control I guess.

Wait, is this really a good idea? Just randomly stopping a car on the road? Let's just shut off this guy over here in the middle of five lanes of traffic surrounded by normal law-abiding people going 70+ mph.

And also, if its going to be a wide-area device, like a mini-emp and shuts off every car in a radius, that's gonna make some people angry. And if its going to be something a cop has to target at a single car........ I can see a "miss" causing a whole lot of angry law-abiding people as well.

I can see this thing being pretty expensive, as well. I don't know if most law enforcement would be able to afford such a thing.

As someone said in the comments section of that news article, firing this thing in the vicinity of a guy with a pacemaker or some other means of electronic support wouldn't be pretty.

It should only kill the engine, not apply brakes, so if you're going 60+ you have plenty of time to pull over (assuming the criminal feels like it). That does lead to another question though: When I turn off my car while moving (buddy did it as a gag in an empty parking lot) my power steering goes out and if i turn it far enough, the wheel will lock. That can't be good at freeway speeds.

What freedom would that be? Your freedom to drive like a maniac getting away from Police? I seriously doubt they are just going to randomly fry cars for fun. Also, those worried about it stopping and causing trouble for other people. It's not like it would come to an immediate stop. It would slowly coast to a stop. Car chases now already close down entire roadways trying to keep people safe from morons. Not to mention when the jackasses run onto other cars and property.

Your steering wheel locks because you physically turned the key off. It's mechanical.

But that is just it. Do you want to live in a world where they (police/THE MAN) have the ability and the power to disable your vehical when they want to? Not to sound like a crazy guy, but how long until we are all microchiped from birth to make it easier to track down if we get into trouble as adults.

Again, a great idea, but as with every new measure for public saftey in mind comes at a cost to our personal freedoms.
