To those who have seen the comic, novel, or anything else, does the story ever explain why Chicago is the location of the final battle? Is there something special that is located there or happens there?

Maybe some sort of powersourse is there. Remember in the trailer, there was the building with the blue glow around it? Behind Sam and Carly?

sam and a group of mercenaries go to chicago to save Carly from Dylan

No really, that's basically the reason.

No reason only that Bay liked Chicago very much when he filmed an AT&T ad there.

I read the Novel and it its because Dylan's penthouse was there and he had the Pillars delivered to his personal location, so they went there. They stayed so the burning city on the outside of town would detour attention from the center of the city

Best explanation. Not like it matters. NYC is over used as is LA. Best place is Chicago.

I agree. Wish they would have picked New Orleans so I could have watched some of it being filmed lol.

I think the OP is asking a question pertaining to the actual story line of the movie; why do they fight in Chicago?
Not why the production team filmed there. I mean, there could have been a Mission-City-esque set and it could have been called Chicago or L.A or Washington DC. j

On the story side of it, I think some Key character(s) might have work in Chicago, or there could be something used in the story, Like Hoover Dam in TF1, covering something up.

:redface2:  Seriously?? Do you actually believe the novel says "just because they feel like it".... It's not possible, at all, that that little addition was a side-note added by the author of the post?

MAYBE its because of Dylan's property in Chicago.

well if the guy who wrote that post put it in that perspective, then they basically invade ONLY because dylan's there as well as carly. I still havent heard a good reason, otherwise i wouldve heard a spoiler on it by now.

No no no, I agree, it's totally because they feel like it, it's just that you said it like if you believed that it literally word for word said "just because they felt like it", and I have a hard time believing that.

I don't think we'll get an explanation besides the Carly and Dylan thing.

"Chicago, huh?" said Simmons, consulting the list of assets he'd pulled up. "Okay . . . his company owns a building on Wacker Drive. Overlooks the Riverwalk. Also he rents a penthouse in Trump Tower . . . "

Epps was listening with interest. "Trump Tower have a helipad?"

    "It does indeed," Simmons said.

"Chopper is stationary. I assume it's landed," Dutch said. "Got the coordinates. Let me run it through an address matrix . . . I've got it at . . . 401 North Wabash."

"That's the Trump Tower, all right," Simmons said triumphantly. "Our bird's gone home to roost."

    ... (later)

Carly glanced out a window. More pillars had gone up all over the city. Purely as a guess, she supposed that there had to be a preponderance of them here in Chicago in order to focus and disperse the energy that was going to emanate from the anchor. It would then be projected around the world to other pillars, and then . . .

Then what? A celestial neighbor pops in?

There you go. It's simply because Dylan chooses to use it as his base of operations. They use the fact that the building's on the Riverwalk to their advantage by raising the drawbridges, much like a castle, in the final act.

    so reason is basically:
the decepticons destroy chicago to secure a "base of operations" for them and Dylan
. hmmm im ok with it. It'll probably make a hell of alot more since in the movie
