Those comparison photos suck. Are those both FULL screen comparison shots? Because the new Sony release is missing a lot of image compared to the Rhino release. Why would that happen?

Huh, I guess some of the early reviews weren't kidding... Hot Rod looks pink now.

    Lame.

Probably because those stills are taken from the widescreen version of the film, which is simply the fullscreen version with part of the top and bottom of the picture cut off.

Not to worry though, the new release has both a widescreen and a fullscreen version.

Are the cut images and pink make it worth rebuying though?

I'm only getting this DVD because of the extra/special features. Personally, I like the dark look of the Rhino release much more than the high contrast tweaks that Sony did. It makes everything look *very* cartoonish in comparison, not to mention completely skewing the colors of Hot Rod and gawd knows who else.

Cool, can't wait for my shipping notice from Amazon!

I think I'll be sticking with the Rhino release for the movie itself - I'm not blown away by the pinkish reds and the loss of image in the new version. The only other thing I've seen that I don't care for is the menu screen with the breakdancing Megs and Starscream. Everything else looks great, and I'm looking forward to working my way through the extras.

I knew there had to be a catch when I heard they were going to include the toy commercials. Hasbro/Rhino had previously said (back in the days of the original release of TF:TM) that the reason that toy commercial couldn't be included was because they would have to "hunt down" the (then) children to get permission from them.

Did Joe Moore mention this in his review?

Nothing more fun than a closeup on an angry blurred kid shouting "Robots in disGUISE!" in a robotic voice. :)

Wait, so does the full screen have more or less than the Rhino version?

Because I've heard almost three different opinions so far.

Slightly more actually. When Comparing the two side-by-side it is just a hair more at the top and bottom.

the sony version has more, and as for the commercials, you only see blurring of kids when they say "robots in disquise" it doesn't hurt the viewing of them one iota. watching those commercials was like sitting down in a time machine..

Again, I will be getting this DVD just for the extras. The full screen version is clearly missing picture around all four sides when compared to Rhino's version.

Er...I seem to be missing something, but...hasn't Hot Rod always been kinda pink? And remember, the widescreen version is missing a bit, but not the fullscreen....

hotrod has appeared pinkish in every version of the film I've ever watched. It's a TV calibration thing that is easily fixed.

So, the "widescreen" version is actually a chop of the fullscreen? That makes sense, since there was never an actual "widescreen" format of the film....

Fine with me. If I want to view everything, I'll watch it on fullscreen, it COMES with both. And the extras are great.

This is awesome! Say what you want about IGN reviews, but rarely does anything get a 10.

I don't mean any disrespect, and I don't mean for this to turn into a flame war, but I still don't have a factual answer for the Sony fullscreen version.

Some sources tell me that Sony's fullscreen version is a further cropping of their widescreen version (meaning that it loses picture on all 4 sides).

Some sources tell me that it has more image than the Rhino version.

    ...they can't BOTH be true.

At the end of the day, we can have the widescreen vs fullscreen debate until the cows come home, but what matters to me is that we get the full image.

I'm interested in seeing side-by-side screenshots of 3 images: Rhino fullscreen, Sony widescreen, and Sony fullscreen.

Is TFW's review going to be updated with screenshots?
