In the G1 movie, Hotrod ended up with the matrix and became Rodimus Prime. If someone else was instead the chosen one, what would their upgrade be? I've seen Auceptus Prime or Goldbug Prime for Bumblebee and Tyrannus Prime for Grimlock. I've also thought that Meistro Prime for Jazz would be suitable or maybe Wrecker Prime for Springer

    Any other suggestions?

Well, when Ultra Magnus got the matrix he got himself blown-up. Hot Rod, being the "chosen one", seems to be the exception not the rule. Also, since "rodimus" and "optimus" aren't actually words, I don't think the first part of the name is meant to imply anything in particular about the charactor.

I see where you were going with this, though, so I'll throw out Armored Prime for Ironhide.

I was wondering if there is a precedent for this in TF fiction? I mean, does everyone (admittedly there have been few) who holds the Matrix acquire the suffix of 'Prime'?

That is pure win. "Tyrant Leader".

Optimus is a word, and it has a genuine Latin root: "optim" which means "best". What does `optimus` mean?

"Prim" is "first". So it more-or-less translates (and not too badly) to "Perfect First" or "Perfect Leader".

However, "rod" means "gnaw" and is the root of words like "corrode". Not very flattering, is it?

As for Ultra Magnus, "ultra" is "beyond" and "magnus" is "great". So that's "Beyond Great". Amusingly arrogant name for a humble guy. So "Magnus Prime" would be the best name, meaning "Great Leader".

Ironhide is easy. "ferr" is "iron". So "Ferrous Prime" is "Iron Leader".

"Boras" is "wind" so "Boreas Prime" for Windcharger.

Wheeljack creates stuff, so "Creatus Prime".

Oh heck, here are some roots: Greek and Latin roots in English - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Go crazy.

I always felt the name ultra magnus was a left over for when his toy was actually going to be the next leader or a remade Optimus in some way... then some dick said hey young "cool" leader the kids will identify with and Magnus got shafted as a charicter but kept the kick ass name.

Ironhidious Prime? Bumblemustard Prime? Prowlimus Prime?

no other character really screams 'leader' or 'popular as hell' than these.

Well if we use Japanese names and conventions it should be pretty easy. Just append Convoy to the end of everything! :p

Yeah... I'd just go for Iron Prime, Bumble Prime, etc.

This is on the theory that you woul only dig out the Greek and Latin (or anything pre-Middle English) terms for names when you really got nothing else; Londoner is to London as Nouvocastrian is to Newcastle.

Though Ferrous Prime and Auceptus Prime rock.

Would Hound be Cannus Prime? Would Mirage be Inconspicuous Prime?

I do prefer TFA's take on Prime (and Magnus and Minor) as a rank.
