A new post at IESB.net gives us another interview with one of the people behind the Transformers Movie, Tom DeSanto. They were able to meet up with the producer at the Saturn awards and talked a bit of Transformers with him. To see the interview head on over to IESB.net by clicking here!

Did anyone else notice that he let slip that the Starscream clip on S7.org was legit? He didn't seem at all surprised when the interviewer mentioned it.

I like Tom and the interview was pretty cool.

Can't wait to see the Teen Titans!

But... I do have one little gripe! Star Wars isn't original. It was bassed off Kurosawa's work. Seven Samurai and Hidden Fortress, etc...

Well, nothing is totally original. Star Wars payed homage to numerous films of the past and was inspired by many more works than Kurosawa. I think what's really at the heart of what Desanto was saying is that we need to expand upon our concepts and bring new ideas to the table, whether they're inspired by works of the past or works of the present. There can still be a fresh "new" idea there. The Star Wars and Indiana Jones films were the 'new films' inspired by the old genres of the early years of their creators. It's up to the young creative talent of this generation to lay the groundwork for the next gen to come.

Great interview by the way. Whether there was new stuff in there or not, Desanto is always a delight in an interview. He's the only guy who can make me excited without revealing "anything at all' , lol.

Well...yes it is original. It is heavily influenced by Kurosawa...and Tolkien (Obi Wan=Gandalf, Darth Vader=Witch King)...and Wizard of Oz...and Dune...and more and more. Yet, it is still original work. It really isn't that great story wise but its a landmark movie, especially in special effects.

If Star Wars isn't original, then neither is anything written by Tolkien himself because he referred to Celtic and Norse Mythology. Superman isn't original because it has influences from the Hercules legend. Batman isn't original because he was influenced by the Mark of Zorro. Godzilla wasn't original because it was influenced by the Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. I could go on.

The artistic community is supposed to draw on what came before. Everything has an influence from one thing or another. That is how we progressed as a people, it is what makes up scholarship. Looking at what came before and taking the next step, pushing it in a new direction.

    Agreed on both points.

DeSanto would SO make a great guest for BotCon next month. One of the producers should be at BotCon as a guest....Or at the very least as an unannounced guest for those of us who'll be at the Advanced movie screening

Couldn't agree more with your post. You will always find that the cream of the crop from any given profession was influenced by the generation(s) that came before them. It happens in sports, the business world, art, everything.
