I don't have a lot of disposable income, so I've never bought or read any of IDW's Transformers comics. Before I lay down a chunk of my upcoming birthday money on the trade paperbacks, I wanted to ask the fandom's general, overall opinion on IDW's work (artwork, story, everything).

    Are they worth buying?

And just so I'm straight on the titles:

    Infiltration
    Escalation
    Devastation
    Stormbringer
    (various) Spotlights
    All Hail Megatron

Is that the entirety of their continuity, or there others I'm leaving out?

    Thanks for the help, everyone.

How much did the TPB's set you back? I have been thinking about getting some.

If you buy them on Amazon.com they are worth it. They are great stories, but I'd never pay full price for them.

Megatron Origins is one you missed, but it sucks so just totally ignore my comment about it all together.

Spotlight (So far there is volume 1 & volume 2) is okay. I wasn't too excited by any of the stories, but it is cool to see specific bots focused in the stories.

Stormbringer is good too. I reccommend.

If you are interested in the classic marvel comics, you can get Transformers Classics volume 1. It contains the first 16 issues of the old US Marvel comics (except issue 3 and 9, but there are summaries, Marvel would not let them print their characters). You can get this for like $17, it is printed by IDW.

My opinion. They are OK reading. But they take the books too seriously.

    As far as choices.

    Stormbringer

    Too seriously? What? Whatev.

I would recommend the books. Individually they cost from $15.00 to $20.00.

If you are a chronology nut like me this is how to read them.

    1)Megatron: Origins
    2)Infiltration
    3)Stormbringer
    4)Spotlight vol.1
    5)Escalation
    6)Spotlight vol.2

Those are the books that are currently out in paperback form. Devastation should be coming out pretty soon, like early summer.

I love IDW. A lot more creative than what came before, and they've got that "dark and mature" feel that all the "adult" fans claim to want.

Didn't IDW also release a Beast Wars, Generations and Greatest Battles of Optimus Prime (or something like that) tpbs?

I remember seeing those titles on sale once... not sure if I'm not mistaking them for Dreamwave releases though.

I'd say get them all. The stories are good and the art is great (it may not be what you're used to seeing, but it will grow on you).

It's worth the buy, in my opinion.

They're all IDW releases, but none of them are part of IDW's "main" continuity, and except for Beast Wars, they're all reprints of stories from previous publishers.

I think the key ones to get in order are:
    Infiltration
    Stormbringer
    Spotlights Vol. 1
    Escalation
    Spotlights Vol. 2
    Devestation (When it is released)

Other IDW stuff that isn't as vital, but still fun are:
    Beast Wars: The Gathering
    Beast Wars: THe Ascending
    Hearts of Steel

What should be avoided like the hate plague from TRoOP:
    Megatron Origins

Aside from putting Hearts of Steel either in a category all its own or right along with Megatron: Origins in the "hate plague" bunch, that sounds good to me. Origins is more standalone anyway and won't impact enjoyment of the IDW comics.

I fear that "All Haill Megatron" might be a big pass. The current interview does not gives me good hopes...

I recommend the BW stuff. Fits in really nice with the existing BW continuity and gives life to the non-show chars and japanese chars in the US continuity.

The spotlights are hit or miss.

I'm a bigger fan of IDW's stuff than any other publisher. I've been collecting all the books but I was dissapointed by a few of the Spotlights as well (mainly Ramjet). I am looking forward to the All Hail Megatron sotryline though.

Megatron: Origin, like All Hail Megatron, was a story written to have nothing to do with IDW's continuity, but was slightly reworked so it (not really) fits in.

There are quite a few continuity errors, particularly the fact Megatron has a completely different personality.

Actually Megtron Origins is a part of the IDW-verse. It's in a small way IDWs' version of War Within.

Pertaining to the personality difference, this is about four million years prior to the events in Infiltration. Lots of stuff could change someone in that timeframe.
