I've gotten behind in my TF reading thanks in part to waiting to pick up the trades over the individual issues, but I'm wanting to know is there is a particular reading order for all of IDW's TF books?

I thought I read somewhere that the events of the earlier Spotlight books took place between the Escalation and Devastation stories. I didn't want to start reading my stack of Spotlight issues if there was a particular order I needed to read them in since I've yet to read the Devastation story.

read the books in the order they've been published

everything just feels like it unfolds nicely [and purposefully]

you read one thing, then read another and then its like "hey! i remember that happening here!"

    so yeah

i would really encourage anybody to read the books in publishing order...not chronological

Here's the TF Wiki's timeline for IDW's continuity, though it still needs some work.

From that, I believe this is the correct order:

    Pre-War:
Megatron-Origin 1-4 (bear in mind this comic was apparently originally written with Dreamwave in mind, so there are some continuity errors (such as cartoon-speech Soundwave), and well as a bunch of characters that are drawn apparently dying, yet turning up fine in Furman's comics, some of which were published before Megs Origin).

    War
    - Spotlight: Shockwave (end of the Ice Age)

    - Spotlight: Soundwave (1985)
    - Spotlight: Ultra Magnus (1989)

    - Spotlight Sixshot (no time specified)
    - Spotlight: Hot Rod (ditto)

    Earth year 2006
    - Infiltration 0-3
    - Stormbringer 1-4
    - Spotlight: Nightbeat
    - Infiltration 4-6

    - Spotlight: Kup
    - Escalation 1-6
    - Spotlight Ramjet
    - Spotlight Galvatron
    - Spotlight Optimus Prime

    - Devastation 1
    - Spotlight Blaster (Nightbeat has what appears to be his Earth body)
    - Spotlight Arcee
    - Devastation 2-6

I'm having a hard time figuring out what to read chronologically.

the IDW TF wikipedia article has Soundwave Spotlight listed before Stormbringer, yet in the comic itself they reference something that happened in it. In that article, Megatron Origins is listed as the one to start with, but in The IDW Timeline article, MO is only number 6 (granted their list is very messy, so it's not too easy to figure it out, IMO.). In that timeline suggestion, Spotlight Galvatron is first, but in that comic we're partially on present day Earth. So THAT one is clearly set after infiltration, right?

Note: I'm not trying to read them by the time they came out, but rather based on when the events in the comics occur.

Also, I know this is a old, OLD thread. but I'd rather bump that up than make a new one myself, to avoid the same replies.

Stormbringer is pretty much a continuation of Spotlight Soundwave, SL Soundwave takes place in 1984.

but how can then SL SW talk about something that happened in Stormbringer, if Stormbringer happens after SL SW?
and is there nothing that covers the gap in the main storyline from Megatron Origins to Infiltration? (not including the side-story spotlights)

The only reference in the Spotlight is that Bludgeon is looking into Shockwave's research into super energon and mentions finding Thunderwing's body. Stormbringer is where he eventually applies that research, and what it does to Thunderwing. It's hard to go into much detail without giving major spoilers though.
And as far as I can recall, there's nothing but spotlights in between Megatron: Origin and Infiltration. (Unless you want to count the Ironhide mini, which has flashbacks to around the time of the start of the war, but that's not complete yet.)

In Spotlight Soundwave, SW realised that Bludgeon was trying to resurrect Thunderwing. It is before Stormbringer (which if you remember ended with Bludgeon going mental after pretenderising himself).

Here is the full reading order in terms of in continuity chronology (from the back of Continuum, slightly amended by me for new releases)

    • Megatron Origin (1-4)
    • Spotlight: Blurr
    • Spotlight: Shockwave
    • Spotlight: Jazz (Is actually set during AHM, but the bulk of the story is a flashback to the war on Cybertron)
    • Spotlight: Cliffjumper*
    • Spotlight: Wheelie*
    • Spotlight Sixshot
    • Spotlight: Hot Rod
    • Spotlight: Soundwave (Set in 1984)
    • Spotlight: Ultra Magnus
    • Spotlight: Neatbeat
    • Infiltration (#0-6)
    • Stormbringer (#1-4)
    • Spotlight: Kup
    • Escalation (#1-6)
    • Spotlight: Ramjet*
    • Spotlight: Galvatron
    • Spotlight: Optimus Prime
    • Spotlight: Blaster
    • Spotlight: Arcee
    • Devastation (#1-6)
    • Spotlight: Mirage*
    • Spotlight: Grimlock
    • Revelation (Spotlights Cyclonus, Harhead, Doubledealer, and Sideswipe - in that order)
    • Maximum Dinobots (#1-5)
    • All Hail Megatron #15 (Story A - the one about Kup)
    • Spotlight: Drift
    • All Hail Megatron #15 (Story B - the one about Perceptor)
    • All Hail Megatron (#1-14, 16)
    • Spotlight: Prowl
    • The Transformers (Ongoing) (#1-3)
    • Bumblebee Miniseries (#1-4)
    • Ironhide Miniseries (#1-4)
    • Last Stand of the Wreckers (#1-5)
    • The Transformers (Ongoing) (#4-8)

The Spotlights marked with * don't really need to be read in any order as they don't relate back to the existing continuity in any meaningful way (don't fit into any other story arc). The Ironhide mini has flashbacks to pre war Cybertron but it's largely set just after the first bit of Ongoing. The Ironhide mini and LSotW fits in between the third and fourth issues of Ongoing but can be read at any point as at this point they've been very self contained and not linked back to the story in Ongoing - however this is not the case with the Bumblebee mini which should be read between issue 3 and 4 of Ongoing.

    Thanks a lot man :D
I found out where the confusion re. SL SW came from. In it they talk about how Thunderwing nearly destroyed them all, then in a footnote it refers to Stormbringer, which turns out to be the second time he nearly destroyed them. I didn't know that :)

I see your list is a little bit different from that on wikipedia. For example: it lists Stormbringer 1-3 between Infiltration 3 and 4.

    Thanks again, much appreciated :)

That's cool man. The list up to Transformers Ongoing #1 is from the back of the Continuum book - which while riddled with errors saw the reading list at the back generally considered one of the better things about it.

Regarding Stormbringer 1-3 I'd say that even if Wikipedia is right (which to be fair it probably is, knowing Continuum) it doesn't matter either way really because the two stories cant be read independently.

Thanks for the list, but d@mn, if that isn't gonna be a frakking mess jumping back & forth between trades (not your fault)... :redface2:
