Yes, the IDW Collection books collect everything IDW has put out in a vaguely chronological order, though if you picked them all up you could still follow the orders from this thread.
I'm confused as to the issues labeled The Transformers #1, #2, #3, etc. They don't have titles....are these all IDW? Can someone send me a link to issue #1 cover or post a pic. I've been following reading order #2 as well as reading the classic volumes, but am stuck as to what those are.
Yeah, IDW's first ongoing had no title other than 'The Transformers'. here's the TFWiki article (with covers) for the first issue:
...For All Mankind - Transformers Wiki
I have a question regarding the order, and if you haven't read through the series there is a SPOILER so beware...
I read The Transformers: Bumblebee #1 then moved onto The Transformers #3 as the list suggests. After reading those issues, I think they should be switched. In The Transformers #3, Blurr is seen escaping from Skywatch. In B#1, the Autobot faction working for Skywatch, is given the task of capturing Blurr. So it seems chronilogically that reading them in reverse order would work better, but maybe I'm missing something in the storyline that wouldnt work if read the way I'm suggesting?
I know Ady went with publishing order over universe chron order not to spoil plot points, but I dont know that a plot point would be spoiled here, at least not in a significant way. Perhaps is the fact that Bee and his team were asked to hunt down an Autobot?
Yeah, chronologically speaking the entire Bumblebee mini takes place simultaneously with ongoing #4. For the most part, yeah, the ongoing's companion minis could probably be condensed into single chunks in that reading order with no ill effects.
A good shout, ill probably sort that out next update.
I just read them in a publishing order that i compiled on excel
Anyways. List updated
My preferred reading order
There are a lot of great reading orders listed here. My reading order is a bit different, so I thought I'd throw it out there.
My reading order is based on two criteria that are important to me.
1. All issues of a mini-series are kept together to provide a smooth read. For an ongoing series, this would equate to a group of issues collected into a graphic novel.
2. I prefer to go with a more published order than a chronological order. This means things like Autocracy and the Dark Prelude spotlight issues are way out of chronological order, but they are in order for where IDW was at when the issues were published.
The one big outlier is Spotlight #25, which fits nowhere. So I put that one where it is collected in the graphic novels. Another outlier is the publishing order around Revelation/All Hail Megatron/Maximum Dinobots/Spotlight #11-15. That was really messed up at the time. The reboot was happening before what it was rebooting even finished. I really wish Furman would have had the chance to finish up his story on his own timetable.

and that takes us up to the end of February 2015. Combiner Wars, which, if Chaos and Dark Cybertron are any indication, will be another low point for IDW. Also, does anyone else think that the presence of James Roberts on MTMTE is the only thing that hasn't forced a reboot yet? Before Roberts, reboots were occurring, on average, after every 45 issues. We are now past double that in the current boot.
I think Barber is due credit too. Most of the "reboots" we've gotten in IDW were caused by new writers coming on board and wanting to change things to suit their stories. When we started this "phase two" of the comics, both Roberts and Barber decided to not throw out the old continuity whole-cloth. In particular, Barber spent a lot of time making the old continuity fit together better all while telling his own new stories.
the fact that people enjoy both Roberts' and Barber's work means those two authors keep their position, which means no reboots, soft or hard.
I will say that I feel bad for Barber at times, having to be the one to do all the toy tie-in material lately.
Yes. Barber has really been a great editor. He's also written some pretty good stuff....I really love the Prowl/Constructicons and Thundercracker/Buster story lines. He and Roberts compliment each other quite well. Although, I did think Dark Cybertron (and Chaos) were both pretty horrible. Generally crossovers turn out to be pretty stupid in hindsight. I like "events" like Fall of the Mutants where the stories don't blatantly crossover, but big things happen and similar themes are explored by the different creative teams. I wasn't trying to hate on Barber. I actually don't understand all the animosity toward him on the boards. I was just saying that Roberts and Milne are elevating Transformers comics in ways that haven't been done before, and no one wants the magic to end. Just look at MTMtE #36...that comes runs the entire emotional range. I laughed at the "time phone" and "hey, best friend" lines, got a bit choked up at the bit at the Orion/Meg and Rodimus/TB conversations, and screamed at the comic on the last page. The last time I was truly and completely satisfied with a single comic like this one was The Tick #3, and that was over 20 years ago.
So I am new to the transformers comics.
I only buy collection editions
Is this the list to buy?
Last Stand of The Wreckers (Hardcover edition)
The Transformers Vol.5: Chaos Theory
More Than Meets The Eye Vol. 1 (collects The Death Of Optimus Prime)
Robots In Disguise Vol. 1
More Than Meets The Eye Vol. 2
Robots In Disguise Vol. 2
The Transformers: Dark Prelude (collects Orion Pax, Thundercracker, Megatron, Bumblebee, Trailcutter and Hoist.)
More Than Meets The Eye Vol. 3
Robots In Disguise Vol. 3
More Than Meets The Eye Vol. 4
Robots In Disguise Vol. 4
More Than Meets The Eye Vol. 5
Robots In Disguise Vol. 5
Dark Cybertron Vol. 1
Dark Cybertron Vol. 2
Do I have to buy the transformers IDW collection (1-8) too?
That's a perfect list to buy to basically follow the shorter of the two reading orders.
You don't need the collections for this order.
So i don't need to buy the more expensive IDW collection.
TRANSFORMERS IDW COLLECTION HC VOL 06 contains Last Stand of the Wreckers.
So, I better buy last stand of the wreckers.
Sorry for the language and stupig questions
Hi, I'm just getting started on the 2nd reading list but I'm still waiting for escalation and devastation to arrive. I've got pretty much everything else including all the spotlights. Just wondering if I'm going to miss any important plots and/or confuse myself if I skip ahead and go back to them when they arrive?
Thanks for posting the list, I'm already pleased I checked before going through in chronological order.
Where does drift empire of stone fit in with the reading order? I am up to punishment and wondered if I should go straight back into not rid/mtmte or the new drift mini? Thanks
Empire of stone hasn't happened yet as per the reading orders.
Strange but true.
Wait, what does that mean, it hasn't happened yet? Like, chronologically, it's too far into the future?
(I haven't read Empire of Stone yet, but I was putting together a list of trades to buy, and it seemed odd that it was the only thing not on there)
Well, we've yet to see Ratchet leave and then return with Drift in MTMTE, so yeah, EOS has presumably 'not happened yet'.
Separate names with a comma.
