Major update: the rework was so significant it warranted a new thread
Heavy/Scratch: - POTP Orion Pax Forearm Replacements for Cleaner Alt-Mode

I love POTP optimus, but the junk on the back of Orion Pax's truck mode is just too much for me.

To clean it up, I wanted to make a cover piece that can store on the trailer/powered up mode somewhere. Due to the bulging nature of the arms and how far back they go, just extending the standard cab wouldn't work, however I figured the IDW style cab with the sleeper at the back might look okay so I modelled this

Ill post more pictures tomorrow, but it splits into 4 parts and pegs over the weird mini smokestack things on Orion Pax

The only thing left to do is to figure out where the individual pieces cans store when not in use, and add appropriate pegs. I'm hoping to have it printed by shapeways latter this week.

This is my first custom project, I'm curious to hear what people think

Looks good, Orion's alt mode does look like the biggest weakness of what's looks like a brilliant toy concept.

I figured out that in cab mode the forearms can peg to the back of the chest. It's not a huge difference but it does streamline the kibble a little bit and could be hopefully cut down how much shell you need and give you more storage options.

This is a great concept so far. Maybe you can reference some ideas in the SND Kit for the CW Optimus. I had those and it is a great add on kit that made the Voyager Size CW optimus to be Leader Size, adding the IDW look for that Optimus was a great addition. Using the smoke stack that you pointed out above is also a part of that SND Kit and it woked out fine.

Is there any way to make this work without partsforming? Just curious, because that would be amazing.

I am hoping it is possible, but I'm not sure. Once I have the visual design and dimensions right I'm going to experiment and see if it is possible

Could you make some kind of insert for the trailer hitch on the back of Orion Pax's head to more firmly connect the cab and trailer?

Sounds good. I saw glue the parts onto the outside of the cab, or perhaps replace the arms entirely. Arm kibble is better than vehicle kibble.

So a quick update, I've decided to take a different approach. I am replacing the forearm and elbow hinge. By making the hinge thinner it will be possible to store the forearm on the opposite side of the arm mounting panel letting me mound the kibble covers directly to the arms and meaning there would be no parts forming

I've posted this on the other one but would it be possible to make a version of the cover that turns into a shield, or splits into several weapons or something. I didn't mind the parts forming one, though I know some people do, but personally I think the arms version compromises the appearance of said arms (I think they wind up a touch flat) whereas a weapons pack could be used to make it look more cool, particularly if you have it form a riot shield for Orion Pax - Supercop
