Of course it's a bad sign. It doesn't mean they're going out of business or they're going to suddenly stop their comic division. Just that they're going to have to be smarter then they've been.

The question is, outside of raising more capital, what else are they going to do? They have some divisions which can't be making them a lot of profit that they should examine, licenses that probably aren't making them much ROI, and as someone stated on another forum, they're allowing for a lot of unsold comics to be returned, so they've got a lot of unsold comics that they printed, sold, and then got back and refunded.

    Baseless? Not really.
I do think we should pause before we eulogize the company, though.

I sure hope that this isn't a bad sign, the last thing we need is for them belly up, and another Transformers comic continuity drops dead on the spot.

It kind of explains why they tied the universes together with Transformers. It is a bad sign but not the end of the company. However, if I were them bring back the artist and writers together instead going cheap. IDW has produced weak titles and crossovers that takes resources away from them without generating more.

Man, that's the last thing I want.
I'm way too far in and invested in the characters of this series for it to just end with no closure.

If you read the interviews with the writers, that's not what happened.

The idea of the shared universe came after IDW bought the rights to write more comics from other Hasbro properties.

Hmm, would be tempting to read this as a judgement on the direction taken with all the cross overs and relaunches. Is this the realisation of a longer trend or something new? If it's new it kind of suggests the cross overs/relaunch maybe haven't been as successful as they should be.

The non big two are kinda competing with each other- a company can live comfortably at that level, though things like overextending or dropping in sales unexpectedly can be a problem.

IDW shot past Dark Horse relatively recently, but DH tends to be more cautious with its books and doesn't expand their lines often.

Buying lines is part of the problem. Some lines like Jem, MLP, and even ROM is doing well because they established their own plots outside of Transformers. Then you add MASK and Micronauts which added basically nothing to the Cross over you can rewrite the whole arc with out them and wouldn't even notice. GI Joe is an exception to the Cross Over in general because they work with the genre of Transformers. MASK is such niche franchise it is nearly impossible to get excited because you have groups are doing that role whether it is EDC or GI Joe in reaction to Cybertronians and terrorism. Essentially MASK became a third wheel. Micronauts make sense in regards to Micronus but even that becomes hard to believe how Earth is tied into Ore 13. You can buy lines from Hasbro but even some of the lines will not work. The question is which lines to buy.

IDW problem is the writing and the story arcs tend to be all over the place. It does not help the comic book sales and promote any line of rights that IDW bought from Hasbro if the arc is bad. Also the art work must be consistent as well. That means you need have excellent editor.

People aren't looking to buy entire lines of new comics anymore. The days of the Marvel Zombie, where readers bought everything under a certain label, are over. People really just want one great comic to follow without needing to read a half dozen other titles. That's why crossover events are so unpopular these days.

The IDW Hasbro Universe has been an abject failure and its alread resulting in cancelations and reboots.
