Looking at the TLK Voyager Megatron toy I was struck by the idea that I could get a pretty decent IDW comics-based Liege Maximo custom out of him with just a repaint and a new head...oh, and a cloak.

I didn't really want to pay £25 odd for one just for a custom, so I was lucky to find a pretty damn good KO on Sirtoys for $14! He just arrived this morning so I'm ready to make a start. I have a few nice shades of Tamiya green acrylic to use, and I'll be adding horns made out of Green Stuff to a spare Generations Sandstorm head, unless I can find something more appropriate.

I'll probably ask Mrs Ottertron to knock me up a cloak.

100% think that is a good choice for the Liege. Can't wait to see how it goes.

Good luck! That original head isn't too far off but I can see how it's different in some frustrating ways. Maximo should definitely be handsome.

I've been thinking about Transformers who wear cloaks recently and how you get fabric on a world with no organic life. Maybe cloaks like Maximo or Tyrest wear are actually made of a fine metal mesh. If you wanted to go that way, I think craft stores sell pieces of mesh like that. They also have the advantage of being posable since smaller pieces bend and hold their shape.

I'll have to shave the ball down on the neck joint but I think Sandstorm's noggin should do the trick. I've painted the eyes yellow and I'll sculpt the horns directly onto the head once I've finished painting the body, so I'll have a better idea of how much space I have to work with and so they aren't too intrusive to the alt-mode.

Good thinking @DrJest , I had considered a mesh or tight mail so I'll take a look around and see what's available.

I had a good look around Shapeways for anything I could use and came up empty. I was looking through my parts box, came across Sandstorm and figured he was as good a base as any.

So here's the state of play for Liege Maximo at the end of the first day of work -

I think Sandstorms head will do fine, with the addition of some horns, BUT I need to shave down the ball joint on the neck substantially and I need a darker grey paint. Still, not bad for a day's work, considering I was also working on two other customs too.

sickkkkk! The horns don't look dissimilar to gussied up Kre-o spider legs like what's found on Airachnid and Blackarachnia if that helps?

Am also keen to see metalmesh capes and the possibilities of turning it into a neato space-sail.

That's a damn good idea! I'll see if I have any spares in my Lego box and if not I'll pick one of those up. Cheers!

Looking at the colour guide I'm using for Liege Maximo and then looking at his actual comic appearances it seemed to me that the colour guide had rendered the non-green parts quite flat, but in the comic they had more shine to them - so, I'm now painting the darker grey parts Gun Metal and the lighter grey parts Flat Aluminium. I think it should look a little better.

Here's how Liege Maximo currently looks. Still got more paintwork to add on his chest, forearms, front flaps (ooer) and back but by the end of tomorrow all that should be left to do is add his horns and cloak :D
