I don't like the artwork and that's the one of the worst redenderings of Optimus Prime I've ever seen. Blah!

Variants are good stuff. That way if i don't like a cover, some swapping can be done. The only one I dislike is the Hot Rod one (atleast I think it's Hot Rod). Optimus looks great, very moody and the Prowl, Wheeljack and Jazz sketch is pretty BA (BadAss)

I can see the direction they're going, but these sketches are so rough I'm surprised IDW is previewing them.

It's just a rough sketch. I have to say that I haven't really liked this series' artwork.

    I like the variant covers...

I don't like that my comic shop hikes the price up immediately on the ultra rare sketch ones... :(

    1. I think these covers have potential, but it is too soon to tell

    2. I think this is the worst render of Optimus that I have ever seen...

Is that second one Wheelie? Because it strongly looks like it.

The second one looks like Ironhide. I thought Rodimus at first, but after looking for a while, definitely Ironhide.

Uh, yeah. These are obviously sketches, so I don't know why people are saying "It's the worst Prime ever" and stuff. I haven't seen this artist's finished work, but the sketches look really promising... ESPECIALLY the Optimus one, simply because it has mood, emotion and character, something that is often sadly lacking in the glorified pin-up art that passes for TF comic books these days.

I mean seriously... Don is great at character designs and claustrophobic dimly-lit interiors, but as an actual sequential comic artist, he's not among the greats. There always seems to be a weird double standard for TF talent... you can be the greatest TF writer or artist ever, and still be just OK by industry standards (Furman is a great example of this).

I digress though... I LOVE seeing sketchy stuff like this. I guess that as an artist, I find sketches exciting because it's like seeing the creative process in action.

I'm indifferent to variant covers, except for the fact that I have my comics on standing order at my local shop, and somehow I always end up with the lamest covers in my bag. Grrrr. :p

^ What he said. This seems to be rough examples of what's to come and I like what I'm seeing. The Prime cover especially. Just needs to be cleaned up a bit.
