I just realised that I need more cats. And just to make the point really clear, Maine Coon's are a great breed.
here's my cat. He's an alley cat everyone kept getting rid of so i took him in (21lbs) we also have an old dusty manx and a maine coon mix Everyone thinks, the manx had it's tail cut off because of it's nub, but it was born like that.
Could she be a mix? Everything I've read about Maine Coons says that they get big. It's basically the defining feature of the breed as far as I can tell.
My sister-in-law's cat, who was the sister to mine, tipped the scale at 25 pounds before they had to put her down due to liver failure. One of my older cats, Trouble (who was VERY aptly named) must've been part Maine Coon as he was a BIG (20 lbst) tough cat. He was an outside cat that loved to play with and torture dogs. He would also run around in the rain and play in the water.
Maine Coons are supposed to like playing with water. My cat hates water, yet she looks just like a Maine Coon. BEHOLD: DR. FLUFFY!
We've got a persian that probably weighs all of four pounds, and they're supposed to pretty consistently be a large breed too. All her siblings weigh upwards of fifteen to twenty, and it's size, not fat. We've got the papers that prove she's pure, but she's a runt. I imagine that happens with other breeds too. And amen to the wiping shit off fluffy kitties. Our persian gets trimmed a couple times a year because we get sick of cutting butt-fur all the time. And our partially fluffy kitty gets a butt-trim a couple times a month just because she cooperates and stands still for it. She's a neat-nick though, and wouldn't tolerate anything clinging to her for any reason. And I thought all cats liked water. I've never had a cat that wouldn't play with water if given the chance. Had one that didn't like getting all the way in it, but she'd still stick her paw in it and swat at it to make a splash any time she saw it.
Is this a maine coon too ? She belongs to my niece though but damn, she kinda likes me. One day I stay over to my niece's house, Bell(yup, that's her name) crept up onto my laps and started sniffing my mouth. I started stroking her neck and she purred at an instant, as if she enjoyed it. She always goes licking around my feet too, just like image above. Sorry that I used sony w800i to snap it.
Here's my cat...he's pretty big for a young one. Last time the vet weighed him he was 18 pounds of kitty muscle.
Not seeing the pic, but one way to tell is to check the toes. If there is long fur between the toes, it's likely a MC or Norwegian Forest Cat (which is the ancestral breed to MCs).
She could be, but she has all the traits of the MC, besides her size. The long hair between the toes, and the chirping sound she makes. MC's are also known for a wide range of movement and flexibility. I once saw my cat playing. She was on her back and she put her back feet over her head and planted them. Then she pulled her head through and was standing all in one motion. I wish I would have gotten it on film. It was pretty crazy looking.
Actually Norwegian Forest Cats and Main Coons aren't related. They are both "natural" breeds that adapted to similar climates, convergent evolution.
