Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I was bidding on an auction last night. I was outbid by a buyer with 0 feedback (auction had about 1 hour left and it was late so I went to bed.) I wake up this morning to find that the buyer withdrew his max bid, but bid in several increments up to my max first. The buyer also now has 1 positive feedback, from the same seller, but on an auction that ended at the same time.

I'm not having a case of buyers remorse, as I actually want this lot of tfs, but it feels shady the way it ended (I'm not paying until I get a few bits of advice.) Any help would be appreciated.

EDIT* I'm not actually going to link to the auction as I don't know if it was actually a scam and don't want to drag anyone's name through the mud unnecessarily

Sounds like they were jacking the price with a fake bid war.

I did that to an auction RW was bidding on before lol

This is a legitamate arguement FOR auction sniping.

If you had used a sniping service, no one would have had time to run this kind of scam - assuming that's what it is - And it sure sounds like it.

However, I think all you can do at this point is notify ebay that it suspicious. Maybe check the seller's other past auctions for a pattern of this happening. But without proof you can't really change this auction, so you might as well go ahead and pay.

Sounds pretty sketchy. Too bad it doesn't remove all the bids placed by that bidder at the end, and go with what the second bidder had originally bid.

Definitely a case of shill bidding. I would call the seller outon it. Try to get a discount from them. If they don't pony it up report them to eBay. Though if you do report the auction eBay will void the results. They won't be able to leave you feedback though.

It sounds like you got "Shilled" or in other words, this person was using a Shill Bidder to drive up the price of their auction.

I agree, you got shilled, it has happened to me a few times but thankfully they only drove up the price an extra 5-10 bucks which I was willing to pay.

    Just send a blunt e-mail.

"Here's what's going to happen. I'm going to pay you my starting bid, you're going to give me the item I bought, and I'm not going to report you to ebay for shill bidding. We'll give each other positive feedback, and you just keep on doing what you're doing."

He was winning the auction when I initially bid, so it was only raised about $12. If you count his initial bids it was raised $20 (next highest bidder was $32 and auction went for $52 + 15 shipping)

I really don't mind paying the amount the auction went for, but I hate when people are dishonest

Hmmm 0 - feedback bidder, misterious bids, that sounds like a trap. Here in Peru we aer having tons of problems with that, since after the movie tons of people want to buy figures, now the local internet sales sites get this kinds of dirty bidding everyday. They are able to increase a $20 price to $125, that's terrible, they even crete tons of identities to bid several times.

I suggest you to report this to Ebay. As you say, it's not the money, it's the fact that letting this dishonest people continue doing what they are doing.

0 feedback shill bidders = me no pay

Also, watch out for the outbid, then seller sends you option to buy the item at the closing price because the bidder backs out. Always tell them you will pay what the auction would have ended at if the bidder had never input his bids.

arent you only liable to pay the price you bid BEFORE he got involved?

I mean, if he withdrew his bid....then the auction shouldn't be so expensive....right? Makes sense to me.

Therefore, his bid is null & void. I would be lead to believe.

But then, Ebay would probably say, "nope, you bid that high, so you you have to pay up to your maximum bid."

See, thats EXACTLY why I don't place a large bid at all.

So like Ferret said...offer him the $32 and if he wont take it then report him. Ebay doesn't play around with that shill bidding crap. They will shut his butt down quick. I think the first offense is a minimum 2 week ban from selling.
