I have the VHS, DVD and got the 20th anniversary DVD for christmas. Currently I am watching the movie with the fan commentary on the first DVD and after that I will have watched all of the content on the two DVDs. I've always been a fan of the movie since I was a kid, and love it way more then the show. I've watched seasons 1 and 2, and a little bit of 3 and just hated the show but the movie was so special. I think its mostly because the movie took so many risks. Killing off characters, the gruesome violence.

I hope though that someday there is an extended version of the movie that has all of this deleted footage and things that were in the script but didnt get into the movie. That wouldn't make for a very good movie it would just be awesome I think. :D

Fixing the many mistakes wouldn't hurt either. But still this is by far one of my favorite movies and I just had to make a thread about it.

I definitely agree that it was the high point of Generation 1 fiction. I've probably watched it many more times than I've watched any other movie. Seeing some of the content from the storyboards and script put back in would be awesome, but I think it would be very difficult to make the added material match after so long.

I love the film as well, but it kinda made me disappointed that they chose to kill lovable characters, in order to introduce new ones.

And as a fan I dont like the reasons behind it either, which was to just introduce new toys. What was amazing about the movie though is that its so strong that it really stands on its own as a good movie not just a 1 1/2 hour toy commerical which is what hasbro was really going for.

Indeed, though many parents and critics of the day seemed to think differently. But as was once said, you don't see people clammering over "Go-Bots meet the Rock Lords"

From a purely technical standpoint, the movie is really fun to watch. One of the better animated movies made, especially for its time.

I love it too! I remember seeing it in a theater as a kid (my first movie without a parent or older sibling) and being so excited, as only a kid can be. All these years later, when I have a bad day, I like to kick back, pop open a beer, make some popcorn, and put TFTM in the DVD player and enjoy.

The Transformers Movie IS my G1. I got into TFers because of Beast Wars. After getting serious into collecting I tried going back and watching G1 but just couldn't. The movie, on the other hand, is amazing. The soundtrack, the serious nature, the destruction, I love it.

Deleted footage does exist. It's just a matter of where it is. I think Paul can confirm/deny this, but I believe the "Prime shoves Ramjet in to the ground" scene was actually animated, and then cut. So it's just a matter of finding it.

I love that they killed off lovable characters. That way when they die it actually means something. Optimus Prime's death is to me the high point of G1. It's the place where the story becomes most involving and real. The rest of it is just kind of goofy now that I look back on it (not that I consider that a bad thing; I still love the series.) But it's because of that element that I can still watch the movie today as more than an amusing romp through nostalgia land.

Good animation. The begining's not too bad, but it's pretty worthless after the Prime/Megs duel. If they wanted to have a changing of the guard, that's fine, but killing off the old guard was just pointless.

And, somebody please tell Kup to STFU!

It is and probably always will be my favorite movie of all time. Where else can you find a planet that eats other planets and transforms into a giant robot that tries to squash planets.

i think we all love the old movie but our opinions of it will always be biased :)

i love it for the fact it represented a time of indulgent commercialism and free of politically correct environment: yay!

also, prime and megs kicked ass and spike said shit.

I love the Movie too and have collected it in several formats. I still feel that if Optimus Prime had somehow lived, G1 might have seen a full fourth season. Consider the possibilities, Optimus would have destroyed Unicron and then would have been smart enough to invite Wreck Gar & friends to Earth to try and save some of the fallen heroes. He wouldn't have wasted monumental resourses to build a "Funeral Ark" and I bet he would have had Autobot City rebuilt in record time and would somehow have saved Teletran I as well, not leave a few Minibots defending it. After dealing with Megatron for milllons of years, a nutsy, unbalenced Galvatron would have been a vacation by comparsion. I could even see Optimus trying to help the burnt out Decepticons on Char. Anyway I do agree with George Dunsey, the Transformers Movie was a product disaster.

    Agreed

It's the same thing I liked about GI JOE: The Movie.

In the comics TFs and Joe/Cobra members got injured or even killed when they get shot. And it just makes sense.

Killing all those guys in the first 30 mins was 1 of the few things that made sense with the cartoon. You get hit with a laser blast, you're seriously hurt or killed

Best Animated Film of ALL time for me. Probably in the top 5 films of all time for me as well. Granted, most of that is based on nostalgia, but can't help loving this film. Its true I cried when Optimus died, Dinobots had lots of action, and the new characters were cool. I still love the new characters. Except maybe Daniel and Wheelie. But they all serve a purpose so I don't mind them really that much.

And come on, no one expected Unicron to transform. I still think to this day if they could have figured out how to make a Unicron Toy back them, oh man that would have been awesome. I remember dieing to get one of these toys when I heard rumours one was in the works. But it never materialized, oh well.
