What if you could use wifi to transfer games you've bought in the Virtual Console to your DS? How awesome would that be? I assume this wouldn't be that difficult and wouldn't require any kind of memory card, since you can download game demos at some retailers now. Granted, the game would disappear when you turn the power off, but DS systems last practically forever if you put them in sleep mode, and it's not as if you'd lose the game forever since it would reside in your Virtual Console and you could always transfer it again.

Unless there's some technological hurdle I'm overlooking, I really think this could be the belated fulfillment of Nintendo's once highly touted GBA/Gamecube connectivity.

All I know is my heart palpitates at the idea of playing Ocarina of Time on a portable.

That might happen in some cases. Nintendo has said that you'd be able to download demos of DS games and send them wirelessly to your DS. This wouldn't be a huge jump.

also, it wouldn't be too hard to create some kind of small memory card that uses the GBA slot, afterall they did mention using that port for accessories.

Yeah, I was already thinking it would do that. So many possibilities

Is the DS as "powerful" as the N64?

The only though against this is hardware/software emulation of the older games.

Sure Super Mario 64 was ported over to the DS, but that spent time in development.
The cost of doing this for other games might not be viable for Nintendo.

It's been discussed in the rumor mill. I don't think the DS is designed to handle that kind of emulation. The n64 games would have to have some engineering tweaks done to work on the DS. Not to mention that the DS is missing quite a few buttons for a lot of n64 games.

they could always do a Virtual Console for Gameboy games via the Wii or something. That shouldn't be hard to do (along with NES and SNES games)

But the touch screen could be used for some of the missing buttons. Like, selecting weapons in Zelda: OoT. Just point to the weapon, it'd no longer have to be mapped out... of course, that would most likely take a long time to develop.

Right, which makes it unlikely for the DS to work with the virtual console on the Wii. Atleast for n64 games. NES and SNES are a possibility.

There may be some more n64 ports to the DS, but I also find it unlikely. New games provide a new experience, better use of technology and creates more sales. The new Zelda for DS is going to have far more success than any n64 port of Zelda to the DS.

I don't think the suggestion was that ALL games could be transferred to the DS. Rather, could some of them be? That's an especially interesting possibility if you keep in mind that the Virtual Console is not limited to emulating old games.

I'd think Zelda: OoT would be well worth the development to port to the DS. Not just for download, but instore, on a cartridge as well.

Yeah, they would have no trouble selling a port of OOT.

I would assume that they will make a new one for the DS. Graphics and gameplay wise, it doesn't exactly push the envelope.

Heck, there is a fan made smash bros that is playable on the PSP.
