Hear me out. Let's go through the list of Primes.

    G1 Diaclone mold = Prime 1
    Powermaster Optimus = Prime 2
    ActionMaster Optimus = Prime 3
    G2 Diaclone mold = Prime 1 again
    G2 Hero Optimus = Prime 4
    G2 Laser Optimus = Prime 5
    G2 Gobot Optimus = Prime 6
BW Bat Optimus = Prime 7
New Beast wars Prime = Prime 8

    Prime 8 = Primate.

They were making a new show with Beast Transformers and had to decide what to make him, so they just did the math.

    Discuss.

Wasn't the two-pack Optimus Primal (bat) vs. Megatron (alligator) released before the Optimus Primal (ape) and Megatron (T-Rex)? If so, your logic is entirely flawed. But I may be wrong. I just remember seeing that item before I ever saw the ultra figure.

That's a bit too simplistic for me.

Clever idea! I think it's most likely a coincidence, but still, neat. I guess if you lumped G1 and G2 Prime together (as their cab was the same mold), you could make an argument that Ape Primal was the eighth all-original mold, even if that included Bat Prime.

I think he was likely made an ape just because apes are powerful, human-like (and thus more relatable) and perhaps for the King Kong homage when paired with Megatron.

There ya go, problem solved. I'll edit the first post.

As for everyone else, I made the post in jest. It was more about the "Prime 8" joke than any actual logic behind the decision.

No, Primal ended up being an ape because after they decided that Megatron would end up being a T-Rex, they thought it would be an excellent parallel to the fight in King Kong if Primal was a gorilla.

    Hah, love the deduction. :)

Always felt Prime should have been a Lion. The 'King' of the jungle, not an Ape. Never understood that decision...

There's Lio Kaiser... but for the record, a gorilla is strong enough to smash a lion's head in.

Lio Kaiser is the combiner released during TF Victory. Lio Convoy is the lion Prime who is in Beast Wars II.

I want your theory to include the number 23 :)

This. I guess if Beast Wars had Lio Convoy instead of Optimus Primal, I would have liked the show more... because Lio Convoy rocks.

I'm glad they went ape instead of lion. Lion is too predictable for leader. Besides if he were a lion I doubt they would have used Cheetor in the series. Too many cats.

Someone mentioned that an ape is stronger than a lion. Well when lions and bears fight the bear wins every time. So I think it would have been interesting if Primal was a bear. But his ape is still cool.

One reasons I like the ape is because he goes from one humanoid to another but it's still a different mode. I always thought going from one humanoid form to another would make for a very boring character but Primal proves that incorrect.

Well, regardless of why the powers that be decided to go with Optimus being an ape (I wouldn't be surprised if they simply wanted him to a rather large animal that was smaller than Megatron, but without needing to be very unique or proportionately strange like the insect guys), I've always found it rather symbolic. I mean, not only did their planet end up being a way back Earth, but the series as a whole (Beast Machines dove into this really hard) held a lot to do with evolution/creation & humanity, all of which are perfectly represented by Optimus Primal as he was.

Bat Primal and Megalligator were indeed first, Kickback. In fact they were meant to be in the show and, then later upgrade become the ultras, but because the effects at the time made water impossible, they skipped to the larger toys.

Primal being an ape and Megatron a Trex was in homage to King Kong (indeed the original bio said he was Optimus Prime with a new name and was a giant building-climbing ape) as well as an ape just being a big, strong animal befitting the leader. Another reason why he wasn't a lion was because there were already TWO big cats in the line. There were even plans for a lion bot, (not Optimus, though) but it was scrapped for this reason and if memory serves this is how Dinobot came to be. (the replacement for the lionbot)

The Ape and T-rex forms homage King Kong and damn it just works for Primal and Megs so well.
