Having just rewatched the movie trilogy, I just had an epiphany: I think if Michael Bay had the choice, he would omit the Autobots from the movies altogether and just have the military battling Decepticons. Honestly, I just couldn't seem to fathom why the Autobots continually get cheated out of screen-time. It made sense in the first one. But, for 2 and 3, there was no excuse. Budget was not the issue. It just wasn't. Look at Avatar. That entire film is photo-realistic CGI. Then it dawned on me: I don't think Bay likes the idea of having "good robots" in the movie. Maybe he thinks they get in the way. Maybe Hasbro's forcing him to include them, because it's Transformers and Autobots are mandatory. So, Bay gives them just enough presence to prevent them from being non-existent. That's all I can figure. Any other director would have followed the 'bots and characterized them, giving them backstory and motives. But, not Bay. And I don't think it's because he lacks the talent. He just doesn't want to.
