Yup, the wife calls me at work today and says she got a letter from the hospital outlining the charges for having our first baby in a few weeks. Over $1K after insurance. I had no idea what it would cost, but I was still a little surprised. Now maybe that is a reasonable amount...not sure. All I know is my wife was laid off in June and hasn't found a job yet and thankfully has a little of $ coming in each month thanks to unemployment. My job doesn't pay the greatest and now we've got another large bill to add to the pile. I sure hope the hospital has a payment plan!

Any other new parents (or recent parents) feel my pain?

You know this got me thinking, my daughter is a little over 2 years and I don't ever recall seeing a bill for it. I had to ask my wife who told me that insurance covered it all. That sucks bro. Though recently we've had some emergency room visits lately which costs me 100 bucks each time.

That sucks man. I'm sorry to hear about your financial situation. Most hopsitals usually have some sort of repayment plan for large bills, so it should be an option for you.

My wife was a school teacher and still has her insurance until next summer and it's been pretty good, so I'm surprised it didn't cover more. Then again, I haven't read the letter yet so I can wait to get home and take a look at it.

I'm not a parent. I do know, for a fact, that hospitals do have payment plans for these situations.

Don't get me wrong, I'd sell every toy I have if I had to. I wouldn't trade this experience for anything!

Sorry to hear that, I hope the best for you guys. There should be a payment plan, you just have to ask. Thankfully, insurance paid for all but I think $100 or $150...

Do you have insurance coverage at work? Both my boys were coverage by my insurance. Total cost for two-three days stay at the hospital was $23,000 billed to my insurance plan. Thank goddness I didn't have to pay out nothing. $1,000 doesn't seem so bad if she in uninsured.

I have awesome insurance. My last kid woulda cost me $25 out of pocket, but my wife needed a blood transfusion afterwards, so I think it might have been $100, total.

I'd like to say something, but I suspect it's too political.

Needless to say, hospital bills are a (potentially massive) overhead I'm very very glad I don't have to deal with.

Here. My wife has been on bedrest since week 7 due to complications and has no insurance. We're already over $3500 in the hole for 2 ER visits, plus the normal doc appts. And she is still in the first Trimester. The meds they have her on are $25 per pill. 3x daily.

My wife and I were thinking about kids the other day and wondered how much the hospital bill would cost.

She works for the federal government though and hopefully the insurance covers everything.

Hey, folks could always just have kids at home! We did that for thousands of years, right? That's my plan, anyways.

I mean, a hospital drastically improves the odds of your child having an uncomplicated birth, but I agree, I'm not sure the physical and mental well-being of one's offspring are worth a potentially massive overheard. :D

    Free babies here.

I don't want to open the political floodgates, but even with the flaws of the health care system I am glad it is the way it is.
