Back during the original airings of season 3 of the G1 toon in the 80's, I am almost 100 percent sure some scenes were included where Rodimus Prime was holding and sometimes clenching in his mouth what appeared to be a cigar. Even as a kid, never really liking Roddy, I thought it was a dumb way to make him seem more like a leader or a military strategist. Like George Patton or Hannibal Smith.

I remember the scenes being quick enough that they probably could have been edited out in subsequent releases of the toon, and to this day I haven't been able to find those episodes/scenes anywhere. Nor have I heard any other fans make mention of it - but think about it - how many of you actually saw the original airings back in the 80's? At a guess I'd say 20, 30 percent tops. I can't even find it on YouTube.

At the same time, I'm virtually certain it happened because things like that tend to leave an impression on a kid. Does anyone else remember this?

I was a big fan of season three and Rodimus as a kid and I don't remember him ever doing anything like what you're describing. I'd say it's just your imagination playing tricks on you.

Could it be possible you're confusing the animated series with the comics, especially recent comics, where cigar-like devices have appeared?

I can't say I ever remember anything like that, even back in the old G1 comics.
Then again, I still sometimes think I saw a Transmetal Scorponok figure shown as a wave mate on one of the Beast Wars boxes. I can see it in my head clear as day but never found a mention of it anywhere else. I even checked all my old Beast Wars packaging just in case. Totally must be in my head.

I'm sorry to tell you but your memory is faulty.

Not only did I see the entire series as it aired...I still have the video tapes of every episode I recorded.

And no such thing ever happened.

Hee hee, okay, that's a cap from "Only Human". That cylinder is full of explosive newtronium, and Rodimus, in his infinite wisdom, has just decided to scratch his ear with it. If you pause it just right... :)

It was the first thing I thought of, though! :)

(I'd forgotten about his oddly squint-y eyes, though. That makes it look even more like he's just taken a drag off the joint he's holding. :) )

Not helped by the fact that his VA often sounded like he was high himself. (or about to fall asleep)

That is class... I am sure it is just what Chris described... but a good screenshot none the less! Right down to his squinty eyes and his little finger stuck out like when posh people drink or smoke :D

Rodimus is a terrible role-model for the kids in that episode then.

Smoking and associating with loose women? For shame!

Unfortunately if everyone here insists that the original airings have not been edited and that it never happened, I have to accept that it could have been something from my childhood's active imagination. Maybe at some point I daydreamed that Rodimus should be more like Hannibal, since I was watching the A-Team daytime reruns the exact same time I was watching season 3.

Still, I get this nagging sensation that it was real. Ah, well.

Eh, you wouldn't be alone in that sort of thing. Many are the people who will claim that Optimus Prime crumbled to dust after he turned black in the movie, or that Grimlock claimed he would "kick ass", rather than "butt". Sometimes we remember things that didn't happen!
