So, here it is, about 3 weeks 3 or 4 hours a day, a few fights with my wife about spending so much time on it, and a scratchy voice from singing it.

Please let me know what you think,

    EDIT/UPDATE
The mix has been remastered and re-uploaded, check out the new version :D

I have wanted to record a cover of this song since... well forever. I still remember my mom yelling at me to stop singing it all the time when I was 5 :lol

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just to answer a few questions that usually get asked when I post songs:

I played the guitar, bass and sang on this.

The drums were programmed in a MIDI sequencer and played back using the ns_kit7 sample set.

The symphonic parts were actually 3 different MIDI files with several instruments layered on top of each other, originally it was one file, but when I went to record it my synth started dropping out (and it is supposed to be able to play 128 individual notes at one time!) so I split up the files, 2 for strings and one for brass and percussion.

The alarm clock sound in the middle of the song was meant to emulate the original version of "I am the Walrus" but I couldn't figure out how to get it to sound the same way it did on the original version.

The speaking parts are also an attempt to emulate the original version of the song, the story goes that when the Beatles were in the studio mixing down the song they turned on a radio and recorded whatever was on it and mixed it into the song. It just happened that BBC 3 was playing Shakespeare's "The Tragedy of King Lear" and were on Act IV, Scene VI, I tried to find some old recordings of it but couldn't - so I just read the same lines that were in the song and distorted them to make it sound like they were recorded from an old AM radio.

I hope you guys have as much fun listening to it as I did making it!

hey man thats not too bad. The vocals sound a little low, try to bring them to the forefront. But other wise theres a decent cover!

Very nicely done. I just recently came out of the studio about 2 weeks ago and still have to go back so im in recording mode non stop right now. Just play around with your mix down and try dif things. It sounded kinda low and some parts could come up like the drums. There are many ways to record things and vice versa and to your ears it will never be right. My best advice is to keep trying and tweak, and tweak again. If you can get it to sound good in the car stereo, you have done yourself a right recording. The car stereo is the master test. Good luck man, I know alot about this stuff if you have any questions.

Yeah, the 2nd mix sounds amazing on the car stereo, but I think I'm going to need to go back in and kill some of the "harshness" on the cymbals, I think they might have gotten double processed.

I like the way the guitar stands out on the 2nd mix too, it seems to have more bite to it.

I'll have to fire up audition when I get home and fix that drum problem.

    EDIT

And I know what you mean about it never sounding right, I have been working on the mix for almost a week, and I'm thinking about going back in and taking out that alarm clock and putting in 3 seconds of the original audio in that part - I've seen Beatles tribute bands do that - I have no idea how they got it to sound the way it did. :mad

"Yellow matter custard, dripping from a dead dog's eye" is just the best song lyric ever.

Great job on the cover. Much better than most I've heard.

Mixing is definitely a bitch, always my least favorite part of doing songs. Still, for the most part you did a good job I think. The guitar, as I said earlier, sounds really good.

You did a great job DC. Only comment for improving it is that I'll agree with those that said the vocals don't stand out enough in some parts. Very cool stuff dude :D

Thanks for all the kind words guys!

I played around with the mix and brought the drums up some, and got rid of the alarm and put a "new" one in.

This should be the "final" mix

Yup, "What you make it" is an original I wrote about 2 or 3 years ago, as is "Bowfly".

I have a bunch of my old "angry" stuff on my other soundclick page, I'm going to have to stick a link to it in my sig...
