here's what i used to do, and i've only been rejected twice out of the umpteen girlfriends i had through middle school and high school (LOL im a man ho): if what you're afraid of is being rejected, then don't allow that to be an option. i would ALMOST only ask girls out when i knew they would say yes. sometimes it'd take a few weeks to work on them and be friendly and get them attached to me, get them to want to spend time with me...and i'd of course have some inside sources  ...but i would never (save twice) ask a girl out, unless i knew that she was going to say yes.

start out just talking to her a bit, being really funny/nice, but try at the same time to seem not interested. as soon as girls know that they can't have something nice/fun, it makes them want it. (why do you think so many 15 year olds are drinking these days?)
slowly work it up to a point where you hang out with her almost every day, even if it's just like lunch time at school or something, and make sure you know she'll say yes (even if you have to get the inside scoop from her friends).

anyway, if it doesn't work, and you don't think she'll say yes, then it wasn't meant to be anyway, and you will also have saved yourself having to be rejected, but at the same time scored some time with a cool girl, even if it wasnt romantic.

i had to work my girlfriend for about two years to get her to like me...and our three year anniversary is in a week
