So yeah, apparently my land lord has decided to permantly close the block of student apartments that I live in. I came home to find that we got a note saying that she's closing the place(didn't give a why) and that our contract ends Dec 31 at noon and would like everyone out by the time it closes on the second. So I have about less than two weeks to find another place to live. Awesome because I'm broke and don't get paid till next thursday. Really, on top of the random medical problem that I've had a bunch of tests done for but haven't gotten an answer yet, yeah my life rules. :(

That's a super shitty thing to do. Is that even legal? Does your state have a "no evictions during winter" law or anything?

I would SO cause some shit if that happened.

I don't know. We're not even sure why. Its just fucked because we heard rumblings about the possibility about a month and half ago, and when we asked her, she said they weren't being closed. Just so freaking random.

I think it is against some law to give people less than a month to find a new place live. What a f-ing bitch...

Good luck and I hope you find a place.

What a fucking bitch. Yeah, look into the laws to see if you can find a "no evictions during winter" thing or a time limit on notices law where you live as was posted above.

...And during the Christmas and holiday season. What a total fucking bitch of a woman! I hope she burns in the worst place in hell!

Also, people like that deserve to get the shit beat out of em as far as I'm concerned.

    Check your contract.
There should be a clause in there of how much time she has to give before you can move out. Standard is a month.

I highly doubt that that is legal. I would also guess there is something in your lease about that.

What a cold heartless beeatch. Agree with the above, I think she has to give you a month. You call the Better Buisness Beauro report her , then call the local News.
There's always stuff like this on our news here, especially around Christmas. Then the people getting thrown out ends up getting alot of help from good people

Dude we have a spare room if you need somewhere to crash for awhile

Check your lease before calling U-Haul for sure. Landlords are often people who couldn't hold down real jobs. Don't think for a second she can just toss you on so short a notice.

My roommates talked to the local paper, I guess it might be on the front page tomorrow. I think the easiest option I have is to move in with a friend of mine who has a spare room. I'm just wondering if I want to do that, or find something more permant. I have one semester left at the college, I was going to stay in my current place and spend the semester saving money and looking for a new place. I'm just totally fucked at the moment.

That was quick! Good luck, and make sure your bitch landlord gets a copy! You could wrap it up like a present and leave it at her door, that should get the message across.

Parents live in Maine. I think it would be a tough commute to school.

What does your lease say about eviction notices?

Did you have a lease that was for a limited time- like through December, or was your lease supposed to be throug Ma/ June. Also, she may have to close things for some toher reason (i.e. not up to building codes, being forced to shut down, etc). Keep us updated, if you don't mind.

The contract is on a basis of a period of time. The current contract went from August and ends on December 31st. She did it on a 5 month basis, August-Dec, then Jan-May, and then its a seperate thing for the summer. And it sucks now too because we had one roommate that was moving out, and we found a replacement, but we're going to have to tell her that she can't now.

No, I'm talking about eviction and lease renewal. In Minnesota, tenants need to be given at least 60 days notice from a landlord that their lease will not be renewed. If you lived here, this was a conversation that by law would have had to take place by Halloween. Eviction with cause is an exception, but I'm not as familiar with it as I've never been evicted and now I own my own place. Is there anything in the contract that stipulates how much notice is required? And if not, you should check your local laws.
